When she came back, I said I didn’t know the size of my girl’s finger. So I left the shop without buying a ring. My wife died a short while ago and the fact that I never paid for the ring has been heavy in my heart all these years. Who was the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Most people would say Confucius (孔子). September 28th is his birthday. Although he was born 2,562 years ago, people still remember him on this day.
Confucius lived in the kingdom of Lu, part of today's Shandong province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. His childhood was sad. His father died when he was only 3 and he had to work to help his mother. But young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry (诗歌) and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time
only children from noble (贵族) families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow Confucius' lessons. He told us that everyone has something worthwhile to learn and to teach. "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some area. I select their good qualities and follow them. I take their bad qualities and change them in myself."
He also taught us that thinking is very important to studying. "All studying but no thinking makes people confused (困惑的) . All thinking but no studying makes people lazy." Confucius was not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. "A kind person should care for others. Be strict with yourself, but be kind to others." he said.

A famous study was done in a school by a professor (教授) from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average (中等), and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.
What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers' attitude (态度) . Because the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected (期待) more from them And so these five average students began to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.
Do you know? If you expect the best from people, they'll usually want to give you their best.
A great leader said, "Treat a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you'll make him
even worse. But treat a person like he's already a success, and you'll help make the best he can be."
Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said, "Johnny, you're the most terrible boy in this class. I'm sure you'll never change." The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she talked with Johnny after school and said, "Johnny, I've heard a lot about you! But do you know that I don't believe a word of it?" And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did terrible things. Later on, Johnny became a school leader.

Mother Teresa once said, "Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person. "
However, a recent survey showed that 25% of Chinese never smiled or smiled less than five times a day. It also found that only 2% of Chinese were willing to smile at strangers（陌生人）. To make a change, a group of forty students from Shanghai Normal University started a team of "Smiling Volunteers". They carried out their first "smiling task" at the Shanghai Film Art Centre. There they smiled at all the visitors and asked if anyone needed any help. Not all students found it easy to smile all the time. "When volunteers help other people, smiling is the best way to
make them understand that volunteers are ready and sincere." One team leader said.
A teacher in charge of the team thought the team's work was not all fun and games. "Most of our students will be teachers after they leave the university. Smiling is necessary for good teachers. We hope they will learn how to smile at each other properly before they become teachers. The team will need more members in the future. We have no special requirements（要求） for the students who want to be members of the team. The only requirement is that they have sincere smiles and helping hearts, and are always ready to help other people." she said.

Mr Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, "if anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea."
"OK, Dad," said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.
Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.
The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door. The boy opened it. A man was standing at the door and said, "Where is your father?" The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper. He could not find it. He suddenly remembered he had burnt it, so he shouted, "No more."
The man was very surprised. He asked, "No more? I met your father last week. When did it happen?"
"Burnt yesterday evening."
