Not long ago, I answered a telephone call from an old friend who I’d not heard from for a long time.

“Hi, my good friend,” said the voice on the end. “I just wanted to see how you’re getting along.”

At the end of the conversation, he said , “if you need me in any way, I’ll be happy to help out.” And he meant it! That call came at just the right time. I needed those words of encouragement. I hung up the phone and felt very warm in my heart. And that day I relearned something important about life: Life is first about people, not plans, not to-do lists and a million tasks left undone---it’s about people.

To love and to know that we are loved is the greatest happiness. And happiness seems to be something that is in short supply for too many of us! My friend reminded me that it is never enough just to love; we must also express it .

- 3 -

George William Childs put it like this: “Do not keep the box of your love and friendship closed up until your friends are gone. Fill their lives with sweetness. Speak cheering words while their ears can hear them and while their hearts can be made happier.”

Happiness may be just a phone call.

( )45.The writer’s friend called the writer because ___________

A. he wanted the writer to help him

B. he wanted to help the writer out

C. he knew the writer needed those words of encouragement

D. he just wanted to know how the writer was getting along

( )46.From this passage we know the greatest happiness is __________

A. to love others B. to be loved

C. to love and to know that we are loved D. to express our love

( )47. “Do not keep the box of your love and friendship closed up until your

friends are gone.” tells us ___________

A. to put our love in the box

B. to show our love to our friends

C. when our friends go, give them our love

D. not to express our love and friendship

As a child, I like going to the river best and sitting on the bank. There I can watch the bamboo trees bend (弯下) under pressure(压力) from the wind, and return softly to their original (原先的) position(位置) after the wind stops.

When I think about the bamboo tree’s skill to jump back or return to its original position, the word “resilience” comes to mind. When the word is used to describe a person, it means the skill to become strong after a difficult situation.

Have you ever survived the experience like the bamboo trees? If so, try your best not to let the situation break you. Life is just a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. If you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments, bend, but don’t break. With hope for a better tomorrow

- 4 -

or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The difficult situation may be easier to deal with if the result is worth having.

So, the next time if you survive the experience, show resilience like the bamboo tree, bend, but don’t break!

( )48.Why does the writer usually go to the river?

A. Because he likes sitting on the bank.

B. Because it’s windy and cool there.

C. Because he likes the bamboo trees.

D. Because he can watch the bamboo trees bend and jump back softly

( )49. The underlined word “resilience” means___________

( )50. Which is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Bad things may not be as bad as they seem to be.

B. Bad things aren’t bad if you get a good result from them.

C. If you survive the bad things, you should bend.

D. There are not only good things but also bad things in life.

Mr. Clinton and his 13-year-old son Tony are basketball fans. Last October 10th was Tony’s birthday, so Mr. Clinton decided to drive him to New York, for the first game of the World Series. They had no ticket but hoped to buy a pair from scalpers. It was a two hours’ ride. After they arrived, they walked in the street for two hours, carrying a sign (牌子) that read, ‘We need two tickets.’ There were many scalpers around, but the cheapest ticket was $200. They were about to leave when suddenly a man stopped them. He took out two tickets and handed them to Mr. Clinton.

‘How much do you want?’

‘Just a present,’ said the man. ‘Enjoy the game.’

Mr. Clinton wouldn’t accept, so the man explained, ‘I’m Jackson. Hans is my boss. He and his wife haven’t missed a World Series in 18 years. But he is ill and

- 5 -

can’t watch the game this time. So he told me to give the two tickets to people who I thought would really enjoy the game. A lot of people seemed that they might just take the tickets and sell them. Then I saw you and I followed you for a while. You looked sad because you can’t afford them. You made me think of my dad and me when I was a child. I dreamed of going to a World Series game with my father. But my dream never came true.’

How do you suppose this made Mr. Clinton and his son feel? Here is what Mr. Clinton said, ‘This is the most wonderful thing that ever happened to us. My boy and I must have turned to each other over 30 times and said, ‘I can’t believe this.’ We still never forget Jackson and Hans.’

( )51. The underlined word ‘scalpers’ in the first paragraph means ______.

A. We should try our best to do what we want to do.

B. Roses given, fragrance (芬芳) in hand.

C. If you cannot see the chance of doing something, just give it up.

D. Never lose your heart when you are down, as there’s always a hope.

Five years ago, David wore an expensive suit to work every day. “ I was a clothes addict (有瘾的人),” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got dirty.” Today David wears casual clothes (便服)---- Khaki pants and a sports shirts----to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I am working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.” More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes

- 6 -

to work. In the United Stated, the changes from normal to casual office wear has been gradual (逐步的). In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday”. “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit (利益) for workers has really become an everyday thing.” Said Maisly Jones.

Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code(章程). “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative (保守的) dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing confortable clothes. In a study made by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of workers said they believe that casual dress improve worker morale. Only 4 percent of workers said that casual dress has a bad effect on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

( )54. Why did David Smith joke “I was a clothes addict”?

A. Because he often wore Khaki pants and sports suit.

B. Because he couldn’t stand a clean appearance.

C. Because he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time.

D. Because he used to carry a fresh suit to work.

( )55. What does the underlined word “morale” mean in paragraph three? It means____.

A. 道德 B. 士气 C. 心情 D. 动机

( )56.According to this passage, which of the following statement is TRUE?

A.”Dress-down Friday” was first given as a benefit from companies.

B. Company workers started to dress down about twenty years ago.

C. Dress-down has become an everyday thing since the early 90s.

D. Many workers want to wear casual clothes to make people remember them.

- 7 -

( )57. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

A. More and more companies have to allow workers to wear casual clothes.

B. Wearing casual clothes will benefit office workers.

C. Wearing casual clothes is good for both office workers and companies.

One possible version:

Dear Editor,

The population on Earth is becoming lager and larger. Our Earth is getting more and more crowded and polluted. Wild animals have lost their living homes. More and more animals around are disappearing quickly. Humans can’t survive on Earth if we don’t take any action. We will have no choice but to move to other planets at that time. We cannot imagine what life will be like in the future. I think we shouldn’t continue to destroy forests. Something must be done to stop factories from polluting our environment

Best wishes Yours faithfully Daniel
