Jenny: How can ordinary people break a world
record ? Brian: I have an idea. Our class could play soccer for a week without stopping. Jenny: How could we do that ? Wouldn’t we get tired?

Danny: And hungry ?
Brian: We could take turns. Some of us would play, while some sleep and eat.

Danny: I’m going to drink lots of milk. I will eat more

fruit and vegetables. Some day I might be the world’s
tallest dinosaur ! Jenny: That’s wonderful, Danny !I don’t know if it will make you tall, but you’ll be healthy ! Brian: Hey, Danny !I have two bananas for lunch. Would

you like one of them?
Danny: That’s very kind of you. but my mother gave me donuts for lunch. I don’t need any bananas.

You hold a world record, Danny. You’re the world’s funniest Dinosaur ! Why? Did I say something funny?

Language Notes
1.We could take turns. 我们可以轮流. take turns 意思是 “轮流(做某事)”后面可以跟

at/in +doing 或to do.
⑴ I will take turns with you at looking/to look after

the injured dog. 我要和你轮流照顾受伤的小狗.

⑵ take turns to do sth
We take turns to watch the patient.
They take turns to clean the blackboard.

2. Some of us would play while some of us sleep and

eat.
我们中一些人睡觉吃饭时,另一些可以踢球.

(1) would( should), might, could+动词 原形是虚拟语气 结构,常用来表示婉转或礼貌.例如: Perhaps you could do better this way. 这样做或许会好些.

(2) while 是连词,意思是“当……的时候”,引导时间状 语从句;当表示过去的情况时,时态常为以下三种情况:

a. 主句和从句谓语都用一般过去时.
eg. She listened carefully while he read.
当他读的时候,她认真地倾听.

b. 从句的谓语用过去进行时,

主句谓语用一般 过去时.
e.g. While the water was heating, Mr. Smith swept the
floor. 在水加热的时候,史密斯先生开始扫地.

c. 主句和从句谓语都用过去进行时.
e.g. While I was having dinner, he was watching TV. 我吃饭时,他在看电视.

while还可以作并列连词,意思是 “然而;而”.

e.g. My father likes sports while my mother likes music.
我父亲喜欢运动而我母亲则喜欢音乐。

3. Some day I might be the world’s tallest dinosaur!
总有一天,我可能是世界上最高的恐龙。

(1)some day,名词短语,表示“(将来)有一天”。
e.g. We’ll travel to the moon some day. 总有一天,我们会到月球上去旅行. one day也有“总有一天”的意思, 表示将来;它也可以

表示“ (过去)某一天”.

e.g. One day, I want to leave the city and move to the

country.
总有一天,我会离开离开城市,搬到农村去. One day, he left and never came back. 一天, 他离开再也没有回来.

(2)tallest是形容词最高级,形容词最高级在句中 既可作定语,也可作表语,用于三者或三者 以上的比较。

e.g.Mike is the tallest student in our class. 在我们班,迈克是最高的学生。 (作定语) Who is the shortest, Alice, Ann or Jody? 谁最矮,艾丽斯,安还是乔迪? (作表语)

4. I don’t know if it will make you tall.
此句中 if 是从属连词,意为“是否”,引导宾语从句。

He asked if they needed some more bananas.
他问他们要不要再来些香蕉。 I don’t know Please tell we they will come or not. you have passed the exam.

辨析 if, whether
都可以用作连词,意为“是否”用来引导宾语从句。但在

有些情况下只能用 “whether”而不能用“if”.
1 具有选择意义,有or 或 or not 时。

I wonder whether it is big enough or not.
2 在介词之后作介词宾语时。 I worry about whether I hurt his feelings.

3 在不定式前,与不定式构成词组时。 She hasn’t decided whether to go or not.

4 引导主语从句或表语从句时。
Whether it is true or not remains a question. 5 作discuss 等词的宾语时。 We discussed whether we should close the shop.

◆ if 既可引导宾语从句,也可引导条件状语从句,而
whether不能引导条件状语从句
