I find English quite difficult, but very interesting. When I first started, I thought I had only to remember the new words and learn some grammars. I know little about English idioms(习语). I thought each English word has the same meaning in Chinese. When I learned to say “I see a book on the desk”, I thought the English word “see” was just like the Chinese word “kan”. So one day when my teacher asked me, “What are you doing?” I answered, “I’m seeing a book.” “That’s wrong.” The teacher said. “You don’t see a book. You read a book. You can’t use an English word like a Chinese one. Be sure not to make the same mistake again.”
After that I began to pay more attention to the differences between Chinese and English. For example, in English we say a “high mountain”, but a “tall man”. In Chinese we use the same word “ gao” for both. Again in English we say “take part in the sports meeting”, “attend a meeting” and “join the army”, while in Chinese we can use “can jia” for all three. Interesting, isn’t it?
So to study English doesn’t only mean hard work, it can be great fun, too! We not only have to pay attention to pronunciation, grammar, spelling and handwriting, we also have to understand English idioms. We can learn English well only in that way!
But all this is only a beginning and I still have a long way to go. I’ll try my best and work even harder than before. I must speak and listen to English more both in and out of class. I must learn English well so that I work well when I grow up. 56. I have learned English for ________ years.

D. after the teacher told me not to use an English word like a Chinese one 59. We should speak and listen to English_________.
A. only in class B. out of class C. both in and out of class D. either in or out of class 60. To study English well, we have to ______.
A. remember the new words and learn some grammars B. know the differences between Chinese and English
C. pay attention to pronunciation, spelling, handwriting and idioms D. do all the above things
Happiness is for everyone. You don' t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads at their free time.
In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking good care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice a bit of them, you can see that happiness is always around you.
Happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can' t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you cannot always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, life is like a revolving(旋转的)door. When it closes, it also opens. If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person.

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Albans--a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge
University where he studied cosmology(宇宙学). As he himself admits(承认), he didn't work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.

When he visited his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried that she made him see a doctor. Hawking was sent to hospital for tests. Finally, the result came back. Hawking had motor neurone disease, an illness which would make him unable to speak, breathe or move without the help of a machine. Doctors said they had no way to help him. He would die before he was 23.
At first, Hawking became very sad. After a while, though, he began to see his life in a different way. As he later wrote, "Before my illness was diagnosed(诊断), I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do." Hawking married, found a job at Cambridge University, and had three children. He also went on to do some of the most important scientific research.
Today, Hawking still works at Cambridge University as a professor. He strongly believes that his story shows that nobody, however bad their situation(处境) is, should lose hope.
