WHITE coats waved around the room and stethoscopes (听诊器) nearly flew off the necks of eighth-graders at Golf Middle School on April 24. Don’t be worried. They were having their Emergency Room Day.The activity was part of the school’s life science class.
The students from Illinois, US, acted as doctors. They rushed around a model emergency room, treating teachers who acted as patients. They needed to study 28 different diseases and learned how each one is

diagnosed (诊断) and treated.
Every time a patient came, a team of young doctors raced against the clock to find out what was wrong with the person. They discussed with each other and sometimes quickly looked through a book of symptoms (症状). Eighth-grader Tina Intarapanont said working in an emergency room was a stressful experience, but that it also helped her understand doctors better.“It’s a risky job,” Tina told local newspaper Morton Grove Champion. “It’s intense because the patients could die if we don’t do this right.”
Luckily, all of the teachers came out of the room alive, said eighth-grader Rahal Malhotra.
Apart from learning teamwork, research skills and medicine, science teachers said they hope the activity teaches students important life lessons.
“It helps them become more educated about how to care for others and to take care of themselves too,” said science teacher Danielle Maldonado.
