No one really knows why we sleep. There are two theories, but a theory is only an idea or a guess—scientists don’t know if these theories are correct or not.
One theory of sleep is called the “Repair Theory.” This theory says that during the day we use many important chemicals in our bodies and brains. We need sleep to make new chemicals and repair and fix our bodies. One piece of evidence (证据) for this theory is that our bodies produce more of a growth hormone ( a chemical that helps us grow) while we sleep.
Another theory is called the “Adaptive Theory.” This theory says that sleep developed because it stopped early humans and animals from wasting energy and putting themselves in danger from the other animals that killed and ate them; in other words, sleep kept them safe and out of trouble. It was necessary for them to
Whatever the reason for sleep, everyone sleeps and everyone dreams every night. Many times we don’t remember our dreams, but we still dream. Like sleep, no one knows exactly why we dream or what dreams mean. There have been many theories about dreams throughout history. Many cultures believe that dreams can predict the future—that they can tell us what is going to happen to us. Sigmund Freud and other psychologists and psychiatrists believe that dreams can tell us about our feelings and desires.
However, some scientists now believe that dreams mean nothing at all—dreams are caused by the electrical 1
activity in our brains while we sleep. These scientists believe that nerve cells fire without any aims and our brains try to make a story out of these meaningless patterns. These scientists say that dreams seem crazy and without meaning sometimes because they are crazy and without any meaning at all.

“Teenager” means a person from 13 to 19 years old. Although they’re young, they have to make many important choices by themselves. Often teachers and parents cannot handle them because they don’t understand and know teenagers, especially their wishes, problems or different moods in a short time. They need to think about questions like these: Should we go to college? What kind of job do I want? However, other people also influence their choices. Who influences teenagers?
It depends on the kind of choice. When teenagers buy things, friends are the most important influence. This is especially true for clothes and music. TV shows, advertisements and parents also influence teenagers. In more serious things, parents are probably the most important influence. Some teenagers say it’s best to regard both parents and friends as influences. James, a seventeen-year-old boy says he’s “just a crazy man”. He also says, “Parents are really important because they can tell you what’s right and wrong.”
But teenagers also feel they need to make choices—to make their own mistakes. As one teenager girl said, “If our parents don’t let us make our own choices, maybe in the future we don’t know how to do it.” And they feel friends can often be a big help, especially because friends sometimes know more about their situation than their parents.
( )1. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Everybody needs to make choices.
B. Teenagers need to make choices by themselves.
C. Teenagers know more about TV shows and music.
D. Teachers and parents should help teenagers as much as possible.

Life was pretty terrible for most people in London 100 years ago. They had to suffer from noise, smoke and dirt. The noise came from the railway, and the smoke and dirt came from the train and thousands of factories all around them. The smoke got together with fog and hung in the air for days. Diseases killed thousands of children. Families were large but often five out of seven children would die before they were five years old.
Is life really better than it was 100 years ago? It is certainly true that people live longer than they used to, travel faster than they could and own more things than they did. But they still have to suffer from noise, overcrowding and bad air which are still a basic part of modern life.
100 years ago there was a clear difference between town and country. But the motor car has changed all that. 3
One motorway can take up a huge amount of land. Cars are also a basic part of modern life.
But industry and modern life do not have to be enemies of beauty. We can have both beauty and progress. In fact, we need clean rivers and open countryside just as much as people did 100 years ago. But nowadays the problem is that it’s becoming more and more difficult to have open land, clean water and fresh air.

A. beauty in nature can be considered as the enemy of modern life
B. there’s a big difference between town and country nowadays
C. life today is certainly better than it was 100 years ago
D. the environment is as important as development
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people don’t have it. Common reasons for not eating breakfast include shortage of time, not feeling hungry, traditional dislike for breakfast, and dieting（节食）. Breakfast simply means “break the eat nothing for at least 6 to 12 hours each night. Even though you have been sleeping, you have still been burning energy. And in the morning your body needs energy for the day’s work ahead.
A good breakfast should provide up to 1/3 of your total calories（卡路里）that your body needs for the day. Generally speaking, we eat 400 less calories for breakfast than for dinner. If breakfast doesn’t interest you in the morning, try eating a lighter dinner earlier in the evening or save half your dinner for breakfast in the morning. If you still aren’t hungry in the morning, start with something small like juice or bread or have nutritious（有营养的）mid-morning snack later when you are hungry.
So, you say you’re on a diet. Some people are afraid that eating breakfast will make them hungrier during the day and they will eat more. It is true that eating breakfast is likely to make you feel hungry throughout the day. That’s because your body is working correctly. Although you may feel as if you are eating more all day long, in fact you’re probably not.
Not eating breakfast may cause you to overeat, because a fall in blood sugar often makes you feel hungry later. To make things worse, since your body is in a slowed state, it will not be able to burn those extra calories well. If you feed your body healthy snacks and meals throughout the day, you may not become hungry so easily and eat too much when you have meals.
Since breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day, your choice is important. The best breakfast foods are fruits, juice, lean meat, and grain products such as bread, rice, noodles and cereals.
