When the world was very young, people lived only in hot places. They did not live in cold places because they could not keep warm there.

At first men did not know how to make a fire. Sometimes trees were hit (被击中)by lightning. Then a fire was started. People took some of the fire near their homes. A fire was very important for three reasons. It kept them warm. Wild(野蛮的) animals were frightened when they saw it. And when food was cooked, it tasted(尝起来) much better.

But men did not know how to make a fire. When they had a fire, they did not let it stop burning. If it went out(熄灭), they could not start it again. They had to wait for lightning to start another fire. Sometimes they had to wait for years.

Later, they learned how to make a fire. But it was not easy to make something burn.

Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it. It is true. People usually begin their talks with "Isn't it a nice day?" "Do you think it will rain?" "What a fine day!" etc.

Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But they hardly agree with each other. One man may say, "Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It's going to rain tomorrow." Another man will say, "No, it's

going to be fine tomorrow."

People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it's going to rain; he won't believe anything else. When friends have a travel, they are sure the weather is goint to clear up very quickly.

Almost everyone listens to what the weather man says. But he doesn't always tell us what we want, and once in a while he makes a mistake. Still, he probably comes closer to being correct than anyone else.

You speak, write a letter, make a telephone call. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words.

Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes".

Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?

People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell you about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV and radios and films all help us to communicate with each other. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

In Some parts of the United States, farming is easy. But farming has always been difficult in the northeastern corner of the country, which is called New England. New England has many trees and thin, rocky soil. Anyone who has wanted to start a new farm has had to work very hard. The first job has been cutting down trees. The next job has been digging the stumps(树桩) of the trees out of the soil. Then the farmer has had the difficult job of removing stones from his land.

This work of removing stones never really ends, because every winter more stones appear. They come up through the thin soil from the rocks below. Farmers have to keep removing stones from the fields. Even today, farms which have been worked on for 200 years keep producing more stones.
