Do you know what Oscar is? When did it start? Maybe you can find the background of the awards in the following passage.
The awards started in 1929. Their full title is “The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards”. The Academy is a group of people who have worked in the film industry for many years. They decide who will receive the awards. The awards are often referred to as the “Oscar”. This is a nickname given to the awards by a lady called Margaret Herrick. She was once the director of the Academy and she once said that the little gold statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar!
The Oscar is always an exciting event. Each year, at least one unusual thing happens. When the Italian actor and director Roberto Benigni won an Oscar for best foreign film, he danced on stage! When Gwyneth Paltrow, the star of Shakespeare in Love won the Oscar for best actress, she could not make her acceptance speech because she was crying so much with happiness!
In 1987, Roberto Benigni won the award for best director for a film about the last emperor of China. Since then, Chinese film and actors have started to make an impact at the award. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a huge success and it won the award for best foreign language film in 2001. It also won several technical awards for its amazing “flying” people. We expect to see more awards for Chinese film in the near future.

(D) Dear students,
I’m very happy to be the speaker today. It’s a great pleasure to visit your school and meet all of you here. I would like to tell you about myself. I have been a reporter for the past fifteen years. I chose this job because I could travel around the world, but the job has taught me many unforgettable(难忘的) lessons. The work is sometimes difficult. I have seen wars, earthquakes, poverty(贫穷) and death. But I have also seen courage, hope and happiness.
In India, I visited a city. There were many homeless children in it. Some were young and lived in the streets. But then a lady called Rosa opened a home for them. In a year, she was looking after two hundred children, feeding them, teaching them and giving them hope.
Another time, I was in Japan after a terrible earthquake. In a place, I found an old lady. Her house fell down. Her son was missing and people said her son could hardly be alive. But the lady didn’t give up hope. For four days, she moved heavy stones by herself. She didn’t stop until she found her son. He was still alive.
Here in China, I met a young boy with a serious illness. He had to have twenty operations in hospital. But when I met him, he was still smiling.
Now when my life is difficult, I always remember the courage of the three people.

People often said Thomas Edison was the greatest genius (天才) of his age. There are only a few men in all of history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be pleased only because someone said he was a genius. "There is no such thing as genius," Edison said. He thought what people called genius was mostly hard work.
But Edison was a thinker as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. He tried to understand them, and then he tried to learn how he could usefully deal with them.
Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people would do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking could give men enjoyment and pleasure.
Edison could not understand why anyone could not be interested in life. As he loved to think, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what idea he had about life. "Work," he answered, "Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make men happier." He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work.
