Unit 7 Birdwatching

Period 2 Reading (1)

Teaching objectives:

1. To enjoy the beauty of the poem.

2. To enjoy the beauty of the four seasons.

3. To learn words about weather.

Important points and difficulties:

Words: butterfly, memory , stream, shade, pile, harvest, crop , temperature,

Phrases: be full of, forget to do, a perfect time, fall into,


1. What a perfect time to fly a kite!

2. Those sweet memories of summer days are about quiet streams and trees and shade.

3. Farmers work to harvest crops, as the days are shorter and the temperature drops.

Teaching approaches and aids: a video, PPT

Teaching procedures:

Step1 Warm up

Speech competition: Ask two students to come to the front , face us and give us their short talks about his or her favorite season, we should ask the two students on the same English-learning level form two different groups , and then decide which is better , then give the better one a point for their group . (if they are both nice ,then give them both a point )

Step2 Presentation

1.Free talk about weather and seasons.

What is your favourite season? Why ?

What’s the weather like in spring/summer/autumn/winter?

2.Show the students some pictures .Describe the pictures and present the new words in the poem.

Step3 Autonomous learning

1. Study objectives and skills

1) Listen to the poem carefully and try to finish Part B2.

Write down the correct seasons and match each season with the descriptions.

2) Check their answers in groups

3) Describe each season:

e.g It’s spring. What a perfect place to fly a kite!

Work in groups.

No.6,No.5 help No.1,No.2 describe each season.

1) Skimming. Read this poem and answer:


1.What can we see in winter?

2.Can trees and flowers grow in winter?

3.Why do the birds fly far away?


1.What can we do in spring?

2.What do bees and butterflies do in spring?


1.What can we do in summer?

2.Where can we often play in summer?


1.Where can we see piles of autumn leaves?

2.What are the farmers busy doing in autumn?

2) Self-study instruction 2mins

1.Read the poem aloud and pay attention to the end of each sentence and find the rhyming words.

2.Complete Part B1 and discuss answers in groups.

3) Scanning. Work in group.

Read the poem again, and discuss and find the sentences in which the writer uses personification.(拟人手法)

E.g. Trees and flowers forget to grow.

Bees and butterflies play among flowers,

They hide from the April showers.

Students show their sentences and try to read them beautifully.

4) According to the passage, try to finish B3 check answers.

When you finish, show teacher green.

5) Post-reading 2mins

Finish Part B4 on P84.

Check the answers in groups.

Read Millie’s article.

Put the poem into Chinese. Can you read it beautifully in Chinese?

Step4 Exercises and Feedback

1. Finish the exercises I and II on your answer book individually.

2. Exchange your answer books with your group members and help each other check the answers according to the right answers given.

3. Mark the questions that you failed to give the right answer on your exercise book.

4. Discuss the difficult questions with your group members and try to solve them.

5. The teacher may give some detailed explanation on the important questions.

Step5 Help the slow and Accelerate the fast

Students help each other if they have any difficulties in the exercises

The students who finish fast can complete their poems.

(Choose one season and write about it with their own words, don’t forget to use personification in your poem) Step6 Knowledge construction

Step7 Homework checkout

Ask the students to exchange their homework they did last night and correct the mistakes and mark in the exercise book , they can talk and find out the right answer to the mistakes in class

Step8 Minimum homework

1. Read and recite the poem .

2. Do Exs in workbook.
