Teaching Plan for Unit 2 in Go for it! (1 B)

(Where is the post office?)

1. The basics:

There are 35 boys and 25 girls, together 60 students. They know some daily English words (e.g.: friend, from, money, eat, etc.) and they can understand simple English sentences (e.g.: She comes from…\ She is…\ I will…etc.).

2. The class routine:

Most Ss can understand what the teacher says about the lesson in class, but there are still several students who have to catch the main idea by repeating or with the help of others. As for the detail information, the import points and the implied meaning, students need the teacher’s instructions and guidance.

3. The ability:

Most of them can understand what the teacher had said and they can use the simple English to answer teacher’s questions, do practice and express their opinions.

4. The class interaction:

The questions the teacher asks are mostly related to common knowledge and the knowledge needed in class. Students can react with their own words and ways. Besides, the atmosphere in class is quite active under the guidance of the teacher and the interaction of students.

5. The strategies:

Ss preview the text, including the new words and the basic understanding of the text before class and most of them understand the text through tasks and finally they practice the target language in text in and out of class.

Learn and practice the sentence patterns (Is there a....? Yes, there is.\No, there isn?t. It?s...) and use them to ask for and give directions on the street.

1) Learn how to pick out key points/words through listening;

2) Learn how to ask for and give the directions;

3) Practice how to ask for and give directions orally and fluently.

4. Cultural understanding and affective objects:

Be aware of the way to ask for and give directions in English and teach students be willing to help others .

1. Stage 1 warming up

Step1: The teacher greets with students;

Step2: The teacher talks about her friend Gina in Bei Jing and she wants to

send a letter in reply;

(The teacher shows a letter and asks students in simple English with

gesture “Where do I need to send it?”)

Step3: Students tell the teacher the place she should go to send the letter is

“邮局”;

(The teacher presents the English word “post office” and students

learn it.

post office 邮局

e.g.: There is a post office. 这儿有一间邮局。

And then the teacher checks several students of speling ofl the words

to consolidate them.)

Step4: The teacher leads in the topic “Where is the post office?”

Stage 2 learning the new words--1

Step1: The teacher tells students Gina will come to Hai Kou;

Step2: The teacher asks students where Gina should live in to lead in the new

word “hotel”;

(The teacher pretends to be tired and makes the gesture of being

sleeping.)

Step3: The teacher asks students where Gina could go in the first day to lead 2

in the new words “street, avenue, restaurant, and supermarket”;

(The teacher asks students questions and gives some explanation

about the new words.

E.g.:--T: When we feel hungry (with gestures) and want to find

somewhere to eat something (with gestures), where should

we go? And, in that place, there are many people at 12:00

a.m.

--Ss: 餐馆!

--T: Right! And “餐馆” is restaurant in English. )

Step4: Students learn the new words, especially “supermarket”.

(The teacher teaches the new words, “street, avenue, supermarket”

in the same way as “post office”. Besides she/he expands the

“super--” into “superman”, “superstar”, etc.)

Stage 3 learning the new words--2

Step1: The teacher asks students where Gina could go in the second day to

lead in the new words “bank, pay phone, park, library, center”;

(The teacher does as the same way about “restaurant” in

Stage2-Step3.)

Step2: Students learn the new words;

(The teacher does as the same way about “post office” in

Stage1-Step3)

Step3: Students review the 9 new words under the guidance of the teacher. (The teacher shows the pictures to make students guess the place and

then invites signal student to spell the word. I.E., pictures→guessing

→spelling.

e.g.: T: (presenting a picture) what?s this?

Ss: Supermarket!

T: Right. How to spell it? A, please.

SA: S-u-p-e-r-m-a-r-k-e-t, supermarket. )

Stage 4 listening comprehension and filling in the blank in 1a

Step1: The teacher presents the picture to students and explains it; (Students find each place in the picture in 1a in Section A.)

Step2: The teacher explains the activity and divides the students into 4 groups; (The teacher explains the task to fill in the banks by an example “post

office”--“Listen to the tape, catch the new words, find the place in the

picture, and write the right letter in the blank”)

Step3: Students listen to the tape three times and the teacher checks the

answers group by group.

Stage 5 pair work in 1c

Step1: The teacher explains the pair work in 1c;

(The teacher explains the pair work in this way: Do it with your desk

mate. One asks “Is there…near here?” and the other tries to find the

place and answers with “Yes, there is. It?s on…” or “No, there isn?t.”

and after explanation, the teacher gives an sample together with a

good student B.

e.g.: T: Is there a bank near here?

SB: Yes, there is. It?s on the Center Street.)

Step2: Students play the pair work freely in the class and the teacher gives

necessary guides;

Step 3: The teacher invites several students to present the conversation and

picks out important points to make students to pay special attention.

(e.g.: SC: Is there a library near here?

SD: Yes, there is. It?s on the Fifth Avenue.

And the teacher picks out the important points:① Is there…? Yes,

there is. It?s on the… / No, there isn?t.②the meaning and spelling of

the new words).

Stage 6 summarizing and signing homework

Step1: The teacher reviews what have learned (new words: (post office, library,

hotel, restaurant, bank, supermarket, street, pay phone, park, street,

center, mail, there, near, avenue; and sentences: Is there a …near here?

\ Yes, there is. It?s on the… \ No, there isn?t.);

(Students review new words like this:

And students consolidate the sentences patterns by making

conversations like the pair work in 1c in Section A orally. )

Step2: The teacher signs the homework: students do pair work in 1c in Section

A which includes the new words and write their conversations down.

Stage 1 reviewing

The teacher shows students the picture in 1a in Section A and “Ask me a

question” in 4 in Section A to remind students of the places (new words) learnt;

(e.g.: T: Is there a library near here?

S1: Yes, it is. It?s on Fifth Avenue.

And then the teacher invites students in pairs to practice this conversation in the same as students do in Stage5-Step3 in The first period.

Stage 2 preposition practice

Step1 The teacher leads in the new words (across, across from, next, next to,

between,front, in the front of, behind) and sentence patterns (Where is the…? It?s next to…).

(Take the “between” for example:

e.g.: T: Where is the library?

Ss: It?s on the Fifth Avenue.

T: Right. And please look at the picture (point at the supermarket

and restaurant). Where is the library?

Ss: 在超市和餐馆之间。

T: Good. We can say, it?s between the supermarket and the

restaurant. (Bb:between) follow me. It?s between the

supermarket and the restaurant (point at these two places and

“between” necessarily).

Step 2 The teacher teaches the prepositions;

(1. across [??kr?s] prep. 横过,在对面

e.g.: He runs across the street.

2. across from 在…对面

e.g.: Just across from our house there?s a school.

3. next [nekst] prep. (next to) 紧靠…旁边 贴近

和beside 意思相同,都是旁边的意思:near比beside 和next to

较远一些,是―附近的意思,它和close to意思相同。

4. between [bi?twi:n] prep. 介于两者之间

e.g.: The bank is between the restaurant and the post office.

5. front [fr?nt] n. 前面,前边

e.g.: The hotel is in front of the post office.旅馆在邮电局的前面 (in front of―在…前面;在…面前(不在所指事物的内部),

in the front of―在最前面(或最重要)的位置(在所指事物的内

部)。There is a river in front of the house. 房前有条小河。)

6. behind [b??ha?nd] prep. 在…之后

e.g.: The supermarket is behind the library.超市在图书馆后面。) Step3 Students do the exercise in 2a in Section A under the teacher’s guidance

and circle the preposition;

(Before students do this task, the teacher explains the directions with

the picture to make students understand better.

Step4 Students listen to the tape and fill in the blanks in 2b in Section A and

the teacher checks the answers.

(The teacher invites several students to read the prepositions out and

tell out its meaning to make sure each of them is clear about the

meaning. And then students fill in the blanks.)

Step5 Students do the pair work in 2c in Section A.

(The teacher show students the picture in 2a in Section A, explains the

task to students and set a sample together with a student E for them

before students start to do the task

e.g.: T: Where is the pay phone?

SE: The pay phone is next to the library.)

Stage 3 summarizing and signing homework

Step1 Students read out the prepositions in 2b in Section A and the sentences in

Grammar Focus to consolidate what learnt.

(Students read the sentences in two groups like this:

Group A: Where is the park?

Group B: It?s on Center Street.)

Step2 The teacher signs homework: make conversations with partners by using

the words of place in the first period and the prepositions in the second period and write them down.

(e.g.: S1: Where is the library?

S2: It?s on the Fifth Avenue. It?s between the restaurant and the

supermarket.)

Learn and practice the new English preposition words (neighborhood, just, straight, turn, left, down, right, on the right).

invites students in pairs to make dialogue like this:

S1: Is there a supermarket near here?

S2: Yes, there is. It?s on the Bridge Street. / It?s between the hotel

and post office.)

Stage2 sentence patterns practice

Step1 The teacher guides students to observe the picture in 3a in Section A to

lead in new words “go straight, turn left, turn right, neighborhood, down”.

(The teacher leads in the new words with the mark on the right top of the picture in 3a in Section A.)

Step 2 Students learn and read the conversation in 3a in Section A;

(The teacher teaches students this dialogue sentence by sentence and

requires them to underline the new words “go straight, turn left, turn

right, neighborhood”. Besides students read this dialogue two times

after the teacher leads them one time. At last, students read this

dialogue in pairs.)

Step 3 Students practice the conversation in 3b in Section A.

(The teacher requires students to observe the picture in 3a in Section A

and complete the blanks. After that students in pairs present this

dialogue out like the dialogue in 3a in Section A in this way:

S1: Where is the bank?

S2: It?s next to the hotel. You can go straight the Bridge Street and

turn left.

S1: Thank you very much.

S2: You?re welcome.)

Step4 Students practice what learnt “go straight, turn left, turn right,

neighborhood, down” by making dialogue in pairs based on the following picture;

S1: Excuse me. Is there a KFC in the neighborhood?

S1: Yes, there is. Just go straight and turn right. It?s Huizhen Street

on the right. It?s between the hotel and hospital.

S1: Thank you very much.

S2: You are welcome.)

Stage 3 summarizing and signing homework

Step1 Students read out the dialogue in 3a in Section A together and in pairs; Step2 The teacher signs homework: students in pairs present a dialogue like

the dialogue in 3a in Section A based on the picture in 1a in Section A

and write it down.

(The dialogue can be made like this:

e.g.: S1: Where is the supermarket?

S2: It?s on the Fifth Avenue. You can go straight the Bridge Street

and turn left.

S1: Thank you very much.

S2: You?re welcome.)

Learn and practice the new words (open, market, clean, quiet, dirty, house).

2. Sentence patterns the communication functions

Learn and practice the sentence patterns (Is there a big/clean… in the

Stage 1 reviewing

Students review what learnt “go straight, turn left, turn right, neighborhood, 9

down” by making dialogue in pairs based on the following pictures, one group for one picture;

(The dialogue can be made as the same as the dialogue in stage 3-step2 in the third period.)

Stage 2 adjectives practice

Step1 Students do the exercise in 1a in Section B and checks the answers; Step2 The teacher guides students to describe the pictures in 1a in Section B

to learn the new adjective words (clean, quiet, dirty, etc.) students

read out the phrases in 1a in Section B;

(The teacher guides students the new words in this way:

T: Now, compare picture a and picture b, what can you find?

(Students keep silent) There is no people in a, but there are many

people in b, right?

Ss: Yes.

T: Right. Nobody is in a so we can know it?s very “quiet安静”, and

the other one is very “noisy吵闹”. (Bb: quiet 安静; noisy 吵闹.)

And then students find out the differences between c and d, e and f,

g and d.)

Step3 Students read out the phrases in 1a in Section B;

Step4 Students consolidate these new adjective words through doing the pair

work in 1b in Section B;

(S1: Is there a big supermarket near your house?

S2: Yes, there is.)

Stage 2 position practice

Step1 Students listen to the tape in 2a in Section B twice and circle the

position;

Step2 The teacher and students do the pair work in 2c in Section B to

consolidate students’ memory;

(S1: Is there a big supermarket?

S2: No, there is a small supermarket.)

Step3 Students complete the map in 2b in Section B based on what they

heard and the teacher checks the map.

Step4 Students listen to the tape the last time sentence by sentence and

complete the map in 2b in Section B.

Stage 3 summarizing and signing homework

Step1 Students read out the phrases in 1a in Section B and the teacher invites

several students to translate these phrases into Chinese;

Step2 The teacher signs homework: describe own house and draw a map like

the map in 2b in Section B based on the way own house to school.

(The house can be described in this way:

My house is very small. It?s very clean and quiet.)

Step1 The teacher teaches students the passage in 3a in Section B to lead in

the new words and expressions;

Step5 Students do the pair work in 4b in Section B and draw a picture to

4. It is about one hundred metres from here. 离这里大约一百米远。

5. You?d better take a bus. 你最好坐公交车去。(You?d better+动词原形)

三.重难点解析

1.enjoy doing sth 享受做某事的乐趣,喜爱做某事 I enjoy reading. 我喜爱读书。 到目前为止,我们学了两个特殊的动词finish和enjoy,都是要带 doing.

I finish cleaning the room. 我扫完了这间屋子。

2.hope to do sth 希望做某事 I hope to pass this exam. 我希望通过这次考试。 hope +从句 I hope tomorrow will be fine. 我希望明天将会晴朗。 (从句即是一个小句子,这个小句子又放在大句子中,从属于大句子,所以叫从句。

如tomorrow will be fine是一个从句,它又放在I hope 的后面,形成句中有句。)

3. if 引导一个表示假设的句子。

If I have much money, I will go to the moon. 如果我有许多钱,我就会去月球。 If you are hungry, you can buy some food in the supermarket.

如果你饿了的话,你可以在超市买一些食物。

四.本单元的反义词、近义词配对

Stage 2 reviewing

Step1Students make dialogues based on the picture

(The teacher gives a sample:

S1: Is there a library in the neighborhood?

S2: Yes, there is. It?s on the River Street. It?s on the left. Where is the Language

School?

S1: It?s on the Yellow Street. And it?s big.

S2: Oh, I know.)

Step2 Students present this dialogue in pairs and the teacher give rewards to the

better ones.

Stage 3 Students read the passage in 3 in SELF CHECK and retell it.

Stage 4 The teacher signs homework: each student finishes reading the passage in

SELF CHECK3 to finds out the way to the destination.
