My name is Jenny. In October 2010, I joined an organization to volunteer to work in Thailand. When I arrived in Thailand, I thought I would be taken to an orphanage (孤儿院). However, I was told that I had to go to the place where I would live by train alone. And then I knew that my job was to teach English in a school instead of working at an orphanage.
The next day I went to the school and met the kids I would teach. In the classroom, the kids looked at me, saying nothing. No one could speak English, but from their eyes, I knew they were really nervous to learn English. It seemed like a big challenge (挑战) for me, but that was just what I wanted.
Although I loved the kids and the challenge, my life in Thailand was quite hard at first. I was alone and there was nobody I could talk to. However, I didn’t give up. If I had been afraid of difficulties, I wouldn’t have traveled all the way from England to Thailand to be a volunteer. Little by little, I learned some Thai (泰国语) and started to fall in love with Thailand. Every time I saw the kids’ pleasure of learning English, I was happy and felt that what I was doing was really worthwhile.
Now I’m working in a hospital in Thailand. If you also want to be a volunteer like me, don’t worry too much about the food or the place where you live. After all, as a volunteer, the most important thing is to help people who need help!

With the development of science, more and more students don’t like taking notes by hand. Instead, they use digital (数码的) cameras to take pictures of the words on the blackboard or record what their teachers say in class.
The children might think there are too many notes to take. Sometimes their teachers write or speak so fast that they can’t take notes clearly. They are trying to find ways to make things easier, so they use digital cameras. In fact, children are very clever to make use of technology (技术).
But do digital cameras really make taking notes easier?
Not really. Before you read notes from digital cameras, there are a lot of things you have to do. To begin with, you have to find a computer. Then you need to copy the photos into the computer. Next, you have to find a printer to print the photos. Another thing is that you can’t hear the sound from the digital cameras clearly because there is usually lots of noise. You will have to listen to it slowly several times before you understand everything.
In fact, taking notes by hand has many advantages. For example, it can help you remember and understand what you are learning. In order to save time, you can choose the most important things or the things you don’t understand to write down. You don’t have to write down everything.
Don’t be afraid to take notes by hand. It’s really an effective way.

I am writing to introduce myself, with the hope of having the editor job you advertised in Daily News. I was born on May 8, 1975. When I was a child, I was fond of English and always got good grades. In 1994, after six years of hard study in Nanjing Sunshine Middle School, I entered Nanjing University. I studied English there for four years. Luckily, I got my first job when I graduated. I taught English in Nanjing Sunshine Middle School from 1998 to 2001. Then I got the chance to receive further education in University of Hawaii in the US. That was a valuable (珍贵的) experience of my life. I learnt a lot during those two years, especially the differences between eastern (东方的) and western cultures.
I came back to Nanjing University in 2003. I worked as a teaching assistant (助手). So far I have got nine years of working experience.
I won lots of awards. I was an “Excellent Student” of Nanjing University in 1997, and an “Outstanding (杰出的) Teacher” of Nanjing Sunshine Middle School in 2000. Thank you for reading my letter, and I will appreciate (感激) it very much if you reply (答复) soon.

Good afternoon everybody,
My name is Liu Xin. I come from Class 1, Grade 9.
I’m very pleased to make a speech here. I’d like to be a volunteer to do something for the American student visitors. I hope to make them know about our school better. I’ve learned English for more than five years. I’m good at speaking English and always ready to help others. I often take part in different social works. I also have learned how to communicate with foreigners.
I hope you can give me a chance and vote for me.
I’ll try my best to work well. Thank you!
