One of My Chinese Friends Come to Visit Me
My name is Jake Roger, and I live in the Hamilton. I was a student of Cambridge University, majoring engineering. I am 23 years old, and I live alone, because my patents are working in London. I like this kind of life, because it is so free. Occasionally, I will like to host a party in my house and visit my classmates and friends to come to join me. We will dance and sing together.
Today, I have one important thing to do. My Chinese friend Lin who I made his acquaintance on the internet three months ago will come to visit me, because she has admitted by the engineering department of Cambridge University.
It is so lucky that we are schoolmates now, and he said he would live with me for three days, because Easter is coming, he want me to introduce something about this festival to him. So we will celebrate the Easter festival together. Now the time is 9:00 am. , and his flight will arrive at 10:00am. So it is time for me to pick up him. Although I have told him my address, hut it is also little difficult for him to find my house. In the end, I decided to pick him by myself. I drove my car go to the HIA (Hamilton International Airport) which was the second of the biggest airport in the New Zealand. When I arrived there, I was covered by the crowd. I just prayed that I could him quickly. Luckily, he wore a deep red jacket so I found him quickly. On the way, he asked me something about the history of the Cambridge University, so told him that the Cambridge University was a public research university which located in Cambridge. It was the second-oldest university in the English- speaking countries. The university grew out of an association of scholars that was formed in 1209, early records suggest, by scholars leaving Oxford after a dispute with townsfolk. The two "ancient universities" have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to cultural and practical associations as a historic part of British society, they had a long history of rivalry with each other. It was a beautiful university, and there was a famous river named “River Cam” through the whole college. And the school motto is “Hinc lucem et pocula sacra”. There were many libraries, lab, research institutions, and many places in there were keeping style and features of Middle-Ages. They were very beautiful. Then he said he wanted to get the bachelor
degree of engineering, so I told him he should learn for three or four years. And I told him I wanted to get the doctor degree, and I need to read for over five years. Then he said I am so ambitious. I told him the college’s present president is Leszek Borysiewicz who was 61 years old. And he was a clever man. Lin said he couldn’t help waiting to see it.
When we arrived at my house, he was very surprised that I have prepared a big party for him. I have told many my friends that he was coming and all of them were delight to accept my plan. We have prepared many delicious foods for him, including the sandwich, fish and chip, pies like the Cornish pasty and so on. Then he said he was very interested in fish and chips. So I told him that the fish and chips are the major traditional food in the Britain. And it derived from Europe. The fish was wrapped with starch firstly; then it was fried for a few minutes. You need to add some crisp chips and seasonal vegetables. Hundreds years ago, the fish men cached the fishes from the deep sea. In order to keep the freshness of the fishes, they invented this means. Lin said he wanted to learn something about the British cooking culture, so I introduced my neighbor Mr. Jason to him. Then they chatted happily. Mr. Jason told him the British afternoon tea culture. Mr. Jason said British afternoon tea was very famous in Britain. And this custom could date bake to the third millennium BC in china and was popularize in England during the 1660s by the second King Charles and his wife. It was not until mid 17th century that the concept of “afternoon tea” first appeared. Traditional afternoon tea consisted of a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserve cake and pastries are also served. Tea grew in India or Ceylon is poured from silver tea pots into delicate bone china cups. However, nowadays afternoon tea is just likely to be a biscuit or a small cake and a mug tea in the average suburban home. When the party came to and end, we were invited to come to Mr. Jason’s house to have afternoon tea. There was a beautiful garden in Mr. Jason’s backyard, and a circular table covered green tablecloth was placed on the grassland. There were a ceramic teapot and many kinds of cakes, tea sandwiches and scones. We were all very happy and excited.
Because of the approaching of Easter, I told Lin that we should prepare
something for this festival. But in fact he knew nothing about this festival, so I asked him to go with me to buy some Easter eggs. On the way to the stores, I told him some traditional culture about Easter. I told him that Easter time in the UK we have two bank holidays (public holidays): Good Friday and Easter Monday. This means that many families can enjoy a long weekend together. Eggs play an important part in Easter sports. The Romans celebrated the Easter season by running races on an oval track and giving eggs as prizes. Two traditional Easter egg games are the Easter Egg Hunt and the Easter Egg Roll. On Easter morning the children of the house join in a search to locate the eggs that the Easter Bunny had hidden while they where asleep. The searching might continue though out the house with the older children helping the youngest. Sometimes prizes of candy are awaiting the child finding the most eggs. Easter egg hunts can are also part of a community's celebration of holiday. The eggs are hidden in public places and the children of the community are invited to find the eggs. The rules of an Easter Egg Roll are to see who can roll an egg the greatest distance or can make the roll without breaking it, usually down a grassy hillside or slope. There are as many as five weeks between the two Easter celebrations. In the Western Church, Easter falls between late March and late April; in the Orthodox Church, it is between early April and early May. Obviously, he was not satisfied with my answer, because when we got home, he took the tax to the church. When got home, he told me that he met an old priest in the church, and he told him many stories about Easter and Jesus. He was really a good learner, because I found he had written everything on his notebook. He wrote that Easter is the Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of the Christian Messiah, Jesus Christ. The most important festival in the Christian calendar, Easter is celebrated on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, depending how Lunar calendar corresponds to the Gregorian calendar in that particular year. So the date celebrating Easter is different every year. On the Friday before Easter, Christians believe that Jesus was executed by crucifixion. His body is believed to have been removed from the cross and buried in a guarded cave, with a large boulder blocking the entrance. Tradition continues that the following Sunday, Jesus' gravesite was visited by faithful women-Jesus' mother the Virgin Mary may
have been among them-who discovered that the cave was empty. Later that day and for several days after, Jesus' followers sighted him and. Jesus' resurrection holds central importance in Christian liturgy, as the pinnacle expression of sin and redemption.
Today, Easter is clearly a Christian holiday, with deep traditional significance. However, scholars actually believe that the festival has its roots in a number of pre-Christian faiths, including Pagan and Jewish. For example, historians believe that the word Easter is derived from the Saxon name of the Pagan goddess of spring. The lunar calendar month of April was dedicated to a celebration of Easter, featuring rituals to mark the vernal equinox and welcome the fertility associated with springtime. Many of these Pagan traditions have been incorporated into Christianity's celebration of Easter today. The Easter bunny and Easter eggs, for instance, are both Pagan symbols of fertility. Furthermore, Jesus' disciples were the first Christians, many of whom are thought to have been historically Jewish. Scholars believe, in fact, that the first Easter celebrations were likely understood as a new form of commemorating the coming of the Messiah, a key component of Passover liturgy. And then he told me he was very interested in British culture, this was also the reason why he come to Cambridge University to study further.
One the Easter day, Mr. Jason invited us to celebrate Easter with them. Mr. Jason has a lovely girl who is thirteen years old. I found she liked Lin very much. Then they played game together. Then we ate the eastern eggs and bunny made by chocolate, and the taste was very special. After that, Mr. Jason’s daughter went to a local community centre to enter an Easter bonnet competition to see whose bonnet is the best and the winner gets an Easter egg. Then in the evening, we went to the church which was decorated with flowers in the spring colors of yellow, white and green. Lin asked me why people would go to church on Easter. I told him that is because people might feel guilty about not going the rest of the year. But some might do for their spouse, children, or for the sake of someone else. When we went into the church there was very quite. Some people were praying, and then an old pastor headed for us and gave everyone a white candle. Then he started reading the Bible, we all prayed for our
own wishes. After finished the pray, we sat down and chatted with each other. Lin asked me what the pastor was talking just now. I told him he was reading some sentence in the Bible. The Bible was a collection of 66 books written by about 40 authors, in three different languages, on three different continents, over approximately 1600 years. The Bible claims to be inspired and inerrant. This means that the Bible claims to be from God and that it is without error in everything it addresses. The Bible contains many different styles of writing such as poetry, narration, fiction, history, law, and prophecy and must be interpreted in context of those styles. It is the source of the Christian religion in that the Bible contains the words of God and how the Christian is to apply the words of God to his life. Lin said he would read this book later, and I introduced some good edition for him. I told him if he wanted to know the religions of Britain, the Bible would be good help.
When we left the church we went to Mr. Jason’ house, and we had a big meal together. Lin said he should leave tonight, and then I took him to the college. He gave me a present before he got off the car, and he said I should took it home and then open it, because it is impolite in china to open a gift at present.
Then I think I also become a little interested in Chinese culture. That is really funny!
