Television first came into being in 1939, but it did not become common until the early 1950s. Since then, millions of children have grown up in front of the set. Many people worry about the effect of TV on children. They wonder if television should be allowed to go. Many parents wish that there had never been such an invention. Why are they so afraid? Is television really harmful?
Like almost anything else, television has its good as well as its bad sides. It has brought joy and interest into the lives of the old, the sick, the lonely. Without it some of these people would have little pleasure in the world.
Unluckily, some television programmes have been very harmful to the young. Children don’t have enough experience. They don’t realize that TV programmes often show an unreal world, commercials tell lies in order to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. Children believe them and want to imitate what they see on TV. They believe the murders on the TV screens are normal and acceptable. By the time they are out of school, most young people have watered 15,000 hours of television, and have seen about 18,000 violent deaths.
Televisions have certainly changed our lives and our society, but it has really brought many problems into the world. We must find a solution to these problems---whether we like it or not----television is here to stay.

C. Because their children would get nothing from the television.

( ) 8. Almost everything, include television .

I’m a middle school student. I have many hobbies and watching TV is my favourite. TV is a part of my life. I watch TV almost every day. I enjoy all kinds of programmes. However, The TV Quiz Show attracts my attention most. From the programme, I’ve learned a lot of knowledge that I can’t learn from my text book. And this knowledge is helpful in my study. Of course, as a student, study comes the first. So I often watch TV for about half an hour every day. And because I want to watch TV, I always do my homework very fast. So you see, watching TV is not only enjoyable, but also useful to me.
