Today I’d like to introduce my pen pal Lisa to you all.
Lisa is from New York, and she’s a vegetarian. ―Why am I a vegetarian? Well, I love animals, so I don’t want to eat them. We can stay healthy if we eat only fruit and vegetables‖, she always says.
There are a few shops and restaurants that sell food just for them. For example, there’s a store near her house that makes lots of dishes with cheese and tofu. The tofu is great but she can’t eat the cheese. It has too much fat.
It’s easy to be a vegetarian when she’s at home. She can make different kinds of food, and she often cooks meals for her family. ―They aren’t vegetarians, but they don’t mind vegetarian food.‖
In some restaurants it’s different to get vegetarian food. Last Sunday, she went to Peter’s Steakhouse(牛排馆)with her friends. They all wanted to eat roast beef(烤牛肉). 4
She asked the waiter whether he could give something with no meat. He said, ―Would you like some fish?‖ ―No, thanks, I only want vegetables –no meat, and no fish.‖ What the waiter said made her upset, ―but this is a steakhouse, people come here because they want to eat meat!‖
So they didn’t eat in Peter’s Steakhouse. There, Lisa had a big salad while her friends had meat pizzas (yuck!)
Smoking in indoor public places including public working places，public
transport vehicles and some other special outdoor working places has been banned(禁止) in China since January 2011．Most people agree with it．
Some people are in agreement that banning smoking helps in saving not only active smokers but also secondhand smokers from health problems．
When the smoker is smoking in a restaurant，the people around him are sure to breathe(呼吸) in the smoke and these people who are called passive smokers or secondhand smokers also have health problems．
Banning smoking can also put stress on smokers to give up. When a smoker doesn’t smell or see anybody around him smoking, it might cut down his wish to smoke too. As a result, people have to give up smoking．
Smoking in public places influences non-smokers to start smoking, especially teenagers. When teens see people around them smoking, they will follow them easily. And the number of teen smokers will increase. Also asthma(哮喘) and other problems are often seen in children living around smokers. So if it is banned, these places will become safer for children and teenagers.
If you see from the environment point of view, smoking should be banned．Smoking causes air pollution．If it is banned，there will be less air pollution． 18
