We drink tea every day, but more than three hundred years ago most of the people in the west countries knew nothing about tea. Some people had heard about it, very few of them knew what with it.

There is a story about an English sailor. He went to many foreign in the east. One day he came home with some as a present for his mother. She told her friends about the present and them to a ―tea party‖. When her friends the ―tea party‖, the old woman brought out some tea leaves. Of course, everybody ―liked‖ the tea leaves.

Millions of animals die each year on US today. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, a kind of cat, like in the US today. Why are there so few? Roads kill. And animals are not the only victims. Every year, many people die in car accidents, too.

Ecopassages (生态通道) may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. Ecopassages are paths both over and under roads. They allow animals to safely. But do the animals actually use the ecopassages?

According to scientists, the is yes. They found mountain lion tracks on both sides of an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lion used the passage. ―is was one of the most days in my research,‖ said a scientist.

Builders of some ecopassages try to them look like a natural part of the animals’ living environment. They plant many trees on and around ecopassages. Seem to like them. About 50,000 animals have crossed an ecopassages in Canada’s Banff National Park just eight years!

The next time you visit a park or drive through a place with a lot of animals, you may see an animal overpass!

The undersea world is very beautiful. Now more and more people want to dive in the water to find the secret there. Scuba diving is a new sport today. It can take you into a wonderful undersea world.

You will find many strange animals in the sea. Some are as large as a school bus. Many sea animals give out light in the dark and some have sharp teeth.During the day, there is enough light. Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands. When you have bottles of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. However, you can’t dive too deep. And you must be very careful when you dive in deep water. The deep sea is not an easy place to live in. It’s cold, and it’s dark, too. The deeper it is, the less sunlight there is. At about 3,000 feet, there is no light at all. It is very dark in the sea. Many fishes have no eyes. Some have big eyes. A few have eyes on one side.

Besides (除了) the cold and the darkness, deep-sea animals face a third danger―other animals. Animals eat! They must find food to eat. Many animals eat plants. However, some animals eat meat. If you want to keep healthy, you should have good habits. Then what is a habit? It is something we do very often. We don’t even think when we do it. It has become a part of our lives. ―Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.‖ This is an old English saying. Do you know what it means? It means that we must go to bed early and get up early in the morning.

If we do, we shall be healthy, rich and clever.

Is this true? Perhaps it is. We know the body must have enough sleep. Boys and girls need eight or nine hours’ sleep every day. If you don’t go to bed early, you will not have enough sleep. Then you will not think properly or do your work well. Of course, you can’t be healthy, or wise or wealthy.

Some people go to bed late at night and get up late in the morning. This is a very bad habit. When we get up early in the morning, we can go out and do morning exercises. Exercise means

doing things with the body. Walking, running, jumping, swimming and playing ball games are all exercises. If the body is not exercised, it becomes weak.

Exercises help the blood to move around inside our body. Blood takes food to all parts of our body.

Our body also needs air to breath. Without air, we will die. We must have a lot of clean fresh air if we want to be healthy. That is why many people like to go out to do morning exercises. 任务一:根据短文内容回答下列问题。

Hundreds of years ago there lived a king in a small country. He liked swimming. When summer came, he always went to another palace by a forest with his guards and returned to the capital in autumn.

One afternoon the king went swimming in a river in the forest but he didn’t tell others about it. He was very happy when he swam in the water. The word―day‖has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using―day‖to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using―day‖to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转)of the earth. At the equator(赤道)day and night are sometimes the same length(长度). They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾斜)toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球)gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

When you think of a forest, what do you see? Just trees? Or do you see many other things, such as singing birds, colorful plants and wild flowers?

The forest is a whole world of its own. It is full of many different living things(生物). But even though they are all different, they have one thing in common: they all need each other in order to live on.

The trees feed the forest ―people‖ by making food in their leaves; by using sunlight to join water and minerals(矿物) from the soil and air. Their deep network of roots joins the soil together and stops it from dying out, making it possible for living things to live in it.

Human beings(人类) are like the living things in the forest. We need one another in order to live. We need the farmers to grow our food, railroad and truck drivers to bring it to our shops and clerks(售货员) to sell it to us. We need people to prepare our food and cook it and others to take our waste things away. Then, of course, we need doctors, nurses, government leaders, mailmen, telephone operators, and many others.

We also need other human beings in another way. We need people for friendship, to talk over our problems, exchange ideas. Think how lonely and unhappy you would be if you lived all alone. Life is a matter of giving and taking. We need to help other people as much as we need other people to help us. Think what a good feeling you have when you have done something for someone else. You know, being a volunteer is so great!

After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said,―Paul, would you mind driving in front of my house?‖

Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again,―Will you stop where those two steps are?‖the boy asked.

He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(残疾) brother. He sat him down on the step and pointed to the car.

You may play ping-pong but perhaps you don’t know who invented it. The story is that it started when two students at Cambridge University began knocking a cork(软木塞)to each other across a table, using old boxes.

In about the year 1 800 an American businessman of sports goods produced a game that he called Indoor Tennis. The Americans showed no interest in it. He shipped it to London and it soon became popular in Britain. The game was then played across dining room tables, or on the floor with the net string(网子)between chairs. The players used a ball made of cork or rubber.

A few years later a hollow(空的)ball like the one we use today was invented. People all over the world loved it at once. A man called Mr. Wood of London, had the idea of covering the bats ( 拍子 ) with rubber. The London businessmen who first sold the game in England mow called it "Ping-pong"—"ping" meant the sound of the bat batting the ball, and "pong" was the sound of the ball batting the table.

The game is played every where, but not everybody likes it. Some even think it is a silly game.

Germs are everywhere. They are very small and you can't find them with your eyes, but you can see them with a microscope(显微镜). They are very, very small and there could be hundreds of them on a very small thing.

I have made a survey among the students in my class to find out what they use the Internet for(why they use the Internet)? 5% of them like reading news on the net, 15% of the students use the Internet to send e-mails/get on line to send mails. Only 10% of the students study on it. But most of them (70% of them) like chatting or playing games on the line. They don’t want to get some useful information . I think it is a waste of time and it is also very bad for their health or study. Some students leave their homes or school because of this. Sometimes they even steal money from their own home or someone else’s. It is terrible.

Exercise means doing things with the body.

Many North Americans love sport. This does not necessarily mean that they get any exercise . What they do is to watch national teams on television. They watch baseball, football , basketball, hockey, golf and

tennis—which means that for most of the weekends they sit in front of the television.(4) they ,are ,watch, with ,them, their, friends, If,friendly.

Baseball is the great American sport and every team has fans. Nearly every big city has a team , and as each team plays 162 games a year, following baseball can take up a lot of time. The playing season begins in spring and finishes in the fall World series, when the two leading teams play each other. The first to win four games wins the Serries. Although called the World Series, Canada is the only other country to take part in it. Football ,played in the fall and winter , is also very popular. It is not at all like the game called soccer. There isn’t much kicking in American football, which has more to do with running with the ball and knocking people down. Each team only plays 16 games during the season, and these take place on Sundays and Monday evenings . (5)Half the country watches the final game on a Sunday , in January.

When there are no good games on television , Americans watch college sports. Many colleges feel that if they want their former students to give money to their old schools, they need a winning football team. To our surprise , this seems to be true.

Answer the following questions according to passage.

1、 When do Americana and their friends sit to watch games on TV?

2、 How many countries are there in the World Series?

3、 Why are college teams important for colleges in America ?
