What is Faculty Development?

?“The total development of the faculty member –as a person, as a professional and as a member of an academic community”

Crow, Milton, Moomaw, & O’Connell, 1976

?Overall goal of faculty development is to help faculty assess their current level of effectiveness and then provide training so that they can

become more effective (formative assessment)

Ages of Faculty Development

?Age of the Scholar (mid-50s to mid-60s)Age of the Teacher (late 60s –1970s)Age of the Developer (1980s)Age of the Learner (1990s)Age of the Network (2000s)

Sorcinelli, Austin, Eddy, and Beach, 2006 (Creating the Future of Faculty Development)

Providing Faculty Development

?What are the 3-5 most common or frequent types of faculty development activities on your campus?

Faculty Evaluation

?“involves the systematic observation of relevant faculty performance to determine the degree to which that performance is consonant with the values and needs of the educational institution”Arreola, 2002 (Developing a Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation System)

Evaluating Faculty Performance

?On what activities are faculty performances evaluated for your institution’s faculty advancement system?

Effective Evaluation Systems

?Two purposes of effective Faculty Evaluation Systems

–Provide feedback for self-improvement?Formative assessment

–Provide data for personnel

?Summative assessment

Arreola, Building a Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation System

Linking Faculty Development and

Faculty Evaluation

?How well do the identified faculty development activities at your institution link to the assessed activities in your faculty advancement system?

The Link is Critical!

?Effective faculty evaluation systems must be linked to faculty development–Evaluation systems implemented in isolation are viewed as punitive

–Development programs implemented in isolation are met with apathy

Arreola, Building a Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation System

Faculty Evaluation at APU

?Multiple-year journey to create an improved faculty evaluation system

–Comprehensive Faculty Evaluation Program (CFEP)?Relied heavily on Raoul Arreola’s work?Current features of CFEP

–Still a work-in-progress

How CFEP Attempts to Incorporate

Faculty Development Principles?Use of parameter values to

emphasize areas of faculty “strength”–Recognizes we don’t do all things equally well

?Optional “Year of Acclimation” for new faculty

?Use of IDEA as formative and summative assessment

IDEA as Summative Assessment?IDEA scores are used directly as one source of data in the Educator-Mentor role

–Faculty report adjusted t-scores from “Progress on Relevant Objectives” and “Overall Excellence of Teacher”

–APU also uses 3 faith integration items, the averages of which are used as part of the scoring sheet

?IDEA data is converted to the CFEP scale

IDEA as Formative Assessment

?New faculty use the diagnostic form in all classes, regardless of participation in CFEP

?Faculty workshops are offered?Individual meetings with faculty to review IDEA scores

How CFEP Attempts to Incorporate

Faculty Development Principles?Graduated scholarship

requirements based on rank and level of work

?Faith integration requirements follow developmental model

?Developmental contracts for low CFEP composite scores

CFEP Checklists

?Participation in faculty development workshops or other developmental activities earn faculty “points” on CFEP checklists

–Attending workshops on improving teaching

–Having classroom observed by a peer

–Building annotated bibliographies that enhance scholarship or faith integration

–Attending conferences, continuing education or graduate classes

–Mentoring or being mentored

Lessons Learned –Toward

Improving the Link

?Faculty can’t agree on anything ?

?IDEA needs to be used more effectively to help faculty grow in ways that improve their CFEP scores

?Optional checklists do not encourage participation in faculty development

?Having separate offices for faculty development and faculty evaluation is a challenge

Creating Balance

?At your institution, what are the challenges

associated with creating an appropriate balance of formative and summative assessment??What are some best practices in the room?
