Listening Comprehension
Unit 2 First Contact

How to start up a conversation at the first meeting? It is important to find common interest so that the conversation can run smoothly. Small Talk In most English-speaking countries, it is normal and necessary to make “small talk” in certain situations. Small talk is a casual form of conversation that “breaks the ice” or fills an awkward silence between people. Even though you may feel shy using your second language, it is sometimes considered rude to say nothing. Just as there are certain times when small talk is appropriate, there are also certain topics that people often discuss during those moments. The hardest part about making small talk is to know how to start a conversation. To gain a better understanding of small talk, review the conversation starters and practice them with a friend. And remember, in an English-speaking environment it is often better to make a few mistakes than to say nothing at all! Small Talk: Conversation Starters

Generally, in our daily life, a successful conversation depends on finding a topic both people can easily talk about. One way of reaching it is to follow a number of steps until a topic of common interest is found. Business or pleasure? 4) Immediate answer: No. Business. Note : These answers are not so helpful in finding a common interest. You need to make an additional comment. 5) Additional comment: But hopefully not my last. Unfortunately only a couple of weeks. Business. My company is setting up an office here in Shanghai. 6) Next question: Have you found time to see much? Really? Where is your company based? 7) Establishing a topic of common interest: Oh, I know it.

Background Information
Unit 2 First Contact

Is this your first trip to ? 或 者How was your trip?

Background Information
Unit 2 First Contact

I’m afraid. My company is setting up an office here.

Background Information
Unit 2 First Contact

I’m afraid. My company is setting up an office here.
A: Is this your first trip to Shanghai? B: Yes, but hopefully not my last. A: I'm pleased to hear that. Have you found time to see much? B: Well, I visited the gardens. A: Oh, are you interested in gardens? B: Actually, yes, it's my hobby. A: Mine too ...

Background Information
Unit 2 First Contact

How do you find it? How do you like it? What do you think of it?

Background Information
Unit 2 First Contact

Making First Contact

1

Nowadays searching for business opportunity ads takes time! It’s a process that calls for some planning before you call. There are at least five key questions you should ask when you first contact a seller or broker about the business listing they have for sale. There are also some other questions you may want to ask. This is not a checklist of all the questions you need to ask, but it’s a start.

3

It may seem obvious to ask, “What’s for sale?” You want to know the name, location and type of business. But remember that the seller or broker needs to qualify you as much as you need to qualify the business. It’s a two-way street, and it starts with the first contact.

If they hesitate, share information about yourself directly. Try to prove you’re a serious buyer. Tell them what you can afford for a down payment. If you have relevant business experience, make sure they know about it. Make sure they know you are more than curious. Make sure they know you are not gathering information for competitors.

You probably also want to ask them the size of the business: annual sales and earnings and how many people are employed. Ask what is included in the proposed sale (like real estate, equipment, etc.). These aren’t all the details you need, but now you are ready to go to the next question.

Listen for information about what you are buying : customers, employees, market position and operating systems. These are the key elements of a business. If the seller or broker is willing to tell you the business “story” in the first contact, listen for information for those categories.

Usually, after answering whatever initial questions you ask, such as, “How is the price determined?” “What’s the financing?” “Why is the current owner selling?” Sellers and brokers will invite you to a meeting and/or offer to give you more information. Before you invest more time, however, be sure you have qualified the business. Does it interest you? Is it an opportunity worth pursuing? Can you afford it?

There are still many more questions to ask in order to be ready to make an offer. But, answers to the above mentioned questions offer a good beginning before you spend more time studying a specific target business.

My First Work Experience in the Public Service

1

It was written in black and white: “The

Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) offers fair and equal access to student jobs in Canada’s Public Service. It provides students with the opportunity to learn about the federal government and gain valuable experience while improving employment skills. So why not?” A quick check of the standard confirmed that I was eligible to apply.

All I had to do was complete the online FSWEP application form. I remember being very impressed by the long list of programs offered to students. There was the possibility of doing Research and Development for National Defense, a program with the Coast Guard, programs for students studying law, and opportunities in employment offices, just to name a few. In my enthusiasm I must have checked every single one of them. So that was it!

The federal government had my application for the FSWEP program. It was all in their hands now. I waited patiently for several weeks before I received any word from them, but I think this long wait was understandable. The federal government employs more than 7,000 students a year, and the Federal Student Work Experience Program is the means by which all these young, eager students apply.

My First Work Experience in the Public Service
4 In the beginning, the recruitment process was sort of suffered. Perhaps this is due in part to the fact that the Public Service is a highly respected employer in the minds of citizens — no other organization hires as many people in Canada! My application was accepted and I was invited to take the written exam, the first true step in the selection process. I passed the exam and was asked to take part in the second portion of the process, the interview. Finally, I was hired and the next thing I knew, I was in charge of a student employment centre.

My first day was followed by three days of strict training. All training was given by our fellow colleagues already in the public service, whom we refer to collectively as les anciens (“the old guard”). The training we received not only prepared us for the work we would be doing, but also educated us about the different roles and values of the public service. As the Service Canada Centers for Youth Summer 2006 campaign took off, I got settled into my office. Time to get to work!

Translation
Unit 2 First Contact

Translation
Unit 2 First Contact

e.g. The administration was free from corruption. 2) 具体词义抽象化 e.g. Every life has its roses and thorns.
