Background knowledge: musical styles Pop: Pop is a regular kind of music. It is
short, simple, melodic and catchy. Rock is a kind of music that you will usually use drums, keyboards, and electric guitars. Rock singers sing very loud.

R&B, which is commonly referred to Rhythm and blues, is comprised of a variety of different but related styles. Jazz grew out of the blues in the 1890's . It combined the rhythms of African music with the instruments of the western world.

World-famous musicians:
Johann Sebastian Bach (巴赫) 1685-1750, German composer and organ player of the late baroque period. He was regarded as perhaps the greatest composer of all time.
Franz Joseph Haydn (海顿) 1732-1809, Austrian composer who exerted great influence on the development of the classical symphony. He was known as “The father of the Symphony and the String quartet”.

World-famous musicians:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (莫扎特) 1756-1791, Austrian composer. He is probably the only composer in history to have written masterworks in almost every musical genre(流派)of his age and was considered among the most prolific composers with more than 600 compositions.

World-famous musicians:
Ludwig van Beethoven (贝多芬)

1770-1827, famous German composer and the greatest composer of his time. His music formed a transition from classical to romantic composition. He began to lose his hearing in 1801 and was deaf by 1819. Although horrible and unendurable for a musician, he still went on composing. His bestknown composition is the Ninth Symphony.

World-famous musicians:
Frederic Chopin (肖邦)
1810-1849, Polish-born French composer and pianist of the romantic period with over 200 solo piano compositions. Chopin’s entire musical output was devoted to his favorite instrument, the piano. Franz Liszt (李斯特) Hungarian composer who achieved fame in his lifetime as a piano virtuoso(演奏家).

Music therapy:
It is the use of music to aid processes of communication and the development of self-awareness. Music is used as a healing therapy to help patients express deep-set emotions, both positive and negative. It is thought to be successful in treating autism, mentally or emotionally disturbed children and adults, elderly and physically challenged people, and patients with schizophrenia, nervous disorders and stress. It is also used with handicapped children to try to overcome personal barriers and disabilities, and to bring a new sense of order and meaning into their lives. Most healing musi
