Language experts say that spoken English was almost the same in the American colonies and Britain. Americans began to change the sound of their speech after the Revolutionary War in 1776. They wanted to separate themselves from the British in language as they had separated themselves from the British government.
Some American leaders proposed major changes in the language. Benjamin Franklin wanted a new system of spelling. His reforms were refused. But his ideas influenced others. One was Noah Webster. Webster wrote language books for schools. He thought Americans should learn from American books. He published his first spelling book in 1783. Webster published The American Dictionary of the English
Language in 1828. It set up rules for speaking and spelling the words used in American English.
Webster believed that British English spelling rules were too complex (复杂的). So he worked to make an American version (版本) of the English language. That’s why the words colour, centre and traveller are spelt color, center and traveler in American English.
The different languages of the immigrants (移民) who came to the United States also helped make American English different from British English. Many foreign words and expressions became part of English as Americans speak it. Sometimes Americans and British people do not understand each other because of different word meanings. For example, a ―jumper‖ in Britain is a sweater. In the United States, it is a kind of a dress.
All these differences led British writer George Bernard Shaw to joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by the same language.

Everyone likes to travel. But those who can not do so themselves can also find it happy to work in a travel agency, arranging journeys for other people. John Smith does this, working in a small travel agency. Arranging journeys for people who have to travel abroad on holiday is often very complicated (复杂的), but he enjoys this work. Most of his work is concerned with holidays, both at home and abroad. Every
autumn, the agency sends out hundreds of booklets full of attractive, coloured photographs, describing the holidays that their customers will be able to have the next year. Soon, people begin to enter the office to book their holidays. Perhaps a week’s skiing in Australia in January; perhaps a cruise (巡游) to the Caribbean in February; perhaps a seaside holiday in Spain in May or a tour to North Africa. John often has to advise people on what holidays will be suitable for them, but they always have a lot of questions. Last year, for example, a lady of aged 82 wanted to book a mountaineering holiday in the Alps, and John had great difficulty in persuading her that it would not be suitable. In the end, she was persuaded to go for a Mediterranean cruise instead. The next day the lady telephoned the agency to thank John for making everything so well for her.
