A) Read the following passage which is followed by five questions. For each question, there are four choices marked A, B, C, D. Choose the one that fits best according to the passage. When you get up in the morning, do you find it hard to choose what clothes to wear?

If so, you probably need help making the bigger choices in your life, like what to do when you’re older.

Brave New Girls, written by an American author Jeannette Gadeberg, will help you make such choices. To make them, it says, you must be a “brave new girl”, A brave new girl is one who’s confident, healthy and happy. A brave new girl can realize her dreams.

To be brave, you need to make decisions by yourself. Other people may tell you what to do, but you should not listen to them. You should only do what you want.

If you always wear clothes like those of your favourite TV stars, for example, you should stop doing this. Instead, you should become your own star and wear the clothes you like.

The book also says that girls must start becoming more confident. If you’re confident, you’ll

succeed in life. A good way to become confident is to realize that you are as clever as boys. Just look at their grades!

Today’s brave new girls will become tomorrow’s brave new women. Only in this way can you achieve your dreams and become who you want to be.

51. What kind of girls may need help making decisions?

A. Girls who are afraid of the dark. B. Girls who don’t know what to wear.

C. Girls who are overweight. D. Girls who need homework help.

52. According to Brave New Girls, what does “brave” actually mean?

A. Strong B. Confident C. Pretty D. Clever

53. If girls want to become “brave”, they A. should look pretty and healthy.

B. should have as poor grades as boys

C. should dress like their favourite stars

D. should become their own stars

54. Which of the following is NOT true about Brave New Girls?

A. It mainly tells girls how to make fashion choices.

B. It was written by an American author.

C. It mainly teaches girls how to be themselves.

D. It helps girls who need advice on how to make big choices.

55. Why is it important for girls to be “brave”?

A. They want to be pop stars.

B. They need to work hard to catch up with boys.

C. They need to realize their dreams.

D. Today’s girls will rule the world in the future.

B) Read the following three passages and follow the instructions for each section.

A

The poachers (偷猎者) had finally found a buyer for their stolen goods. When the buyer asked to see the goods, they brought out a small bag and open it. Inside was a terrified on-year-old gorilla, Dunia. The poachers had probably killed the little gorilla’s parents and caught her in the forest of the Congo, in Africa.

But the buyer didn’t bring money; he brought the police. The poachers were caught by the police and the little gorilla was rushed to the nearby headquarters of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project.

“Baby gorillas simply don’t live long without their mothers’ regular body contact (接触),” says veterinarian Chris Whittier. “They give up the will to live. Dunia surely would have died within a week if the poachers hadn’t been caught.” Surprisingly, gorillas are well known for their great size and strength, but the young ones can die very easily.

Dunia, the baby gorilla, didn’t like the human attention at first. Dunia needed contact, but there was no reason why she would trust people after what she’d been through. Humans had killed her family. Hunters kill almost any animal they find.

“Dunia didn’t trust humans right away,” says Whittier, “but she would rather be with someone than be alone.”

After six months of loving care that included around-the-clock attention and a good diet, Dunia was looking and acting like a healthy, happy young gorilla should.
