Interest is the driving force in learning English. Psychological research shows that interest can make people’s brain remain at the most active state and receive the educational information greatly. The reason why students are not fond of learning English is that they do not take interest in it. Therefore fostering interest in English teaching and learning in elementary school is the key point of improving English teaching. Teachers must strive to stimulate English interest among the pupils, and mobilize the enthusiasm and initiative of the pupils. In this thesis, the importance of English interest is discussed in the first part of perspectives. Moreover the ways of stimulating interest to help teachers improve their teaching are also summarized in the last part. Meanwhile the thesis reveals that English interest has the positive impact on English teaching.

As a foreign language, English requires its learners to persevere with study and practice. After joining the WTO, China has been paying more and more attention to the standards of foreign languages. At present, English has been compiled as a main course into pupils' daily classes. As far as pupils are concerned, their physiology, psychology and the ways of thinking are limited. Interest in studies is one of the main factors if learners want to master knowledge steadily, because “Interest is the most important inner motivation in studies.” Pupils are able to learn English by themselves when the interest is stimulated. Teachers should use different methods to stimulate pupils' interest in English learning. In

fact, every pupil hopes that the time they spend at school is interesting, meaningful and rewarding. Interest is the previous condition of fostering happy learning. It is also the foundation stone of mastering knowledge, so plentiful and real language environment should be established for the learners. In order to sufficiently develop every pupil's language ability, teachers should stimulate pupils' interest, change pupils' roles in learning and develop pupils' ability of mastering and applying the language they have learned.

Chapter Ⅰ The Importance of Interest

Interest is very important to anything, because the interest is the guide of primer, it can availably stir up the function of brain organization and be advantageous to the new clues that discovers thing, and carry on investigating a creation. The study is also similar, “the interest is the best nourishment and catalyst of study.” 1Einstein once said: The interest is the best teacher. The interest is a successful secret to study, the beginning that obtains knowledge, and the foundation desiring for knowledge.

1.1 The best study motive.

Famous psychologist (J.S.Bruner) in the United States says: “The best study motive is to have inside interest to the material learned.” The 60’s in 20th century the education psychologist in the United States Lu Na (J.S.Bruner) put forward the teaching method of discover study to the actual condition that the student learns a foreign language. He emphasizes that the student is in person ready thing sorting and making the student become finder by himself. The (J.S.Bruner) thinks the interest that detection study method consumedly is advantageous to the intelligence that reassesses student’s studying. Consequently in daily English teaching, the teacher should constantly induct, arises, and satisfy the students’ tendency of learning English.

The interest is the most direct study motive, and the interest is a fine

health emotion. The interest is one of the main paths creating an education environment full of happiness and bright. “To student, excessive emotion depressive, nervous relationship between teacher and student and the monotone learning process will make them low themselves interest for English, even make them afraid of having English class.”

1.2. A kind of positive factor in English learning.

Interest is a kind of positive factor in English learning, and has the function that teachers and students cannot underestimate in the English teaching and learning. It is important for the teacher to give great attention to the development of the students' interest, and of course, this is the key to success of English learning. As everyone knows, interest is the best teacher in English learning. From the psychological point of view, interest is an active factor for mankind to explore things and perform certain activities, and has a tendency to concentrate one's efforts on learning. Interest also plays a leading role in English learning. The interest of learning is an important integrant in the course of teaching and learning, and it is the most active and realistic factor of initiative and enthusiasm. Only those who have strong interest in English learning can do well and get the best results, and they can bring all their faculties into full play in learning. As every road leads to Roman, interest can lead one to any place where he wants to go as farther as he can. At last he will be able to make much progress and win great success in English learning.

With the reform of education, people begin to know that the quality of schools depends on the quality of teachers. It is clear that the students’ interest of learning directly affects the learning quality. The interest of learning, in turn, will promote learning results. Only under the guidance of great efforts together with the strong interest can teachers help students learn English well and enjoy the happiness of English learning.2

1.3.Using body language

Thirdly, the teachers should use body language. Every one has the eyes,

ears, nose, mouth and so on. Everyone is the model, not only real but also very helpful for the pupils to remember the names. When teachers are using body language to teach the parts of the body, the pupil will feel interesting when other pupils make a mistake, such as pointing an ear to an eye or pointing a nose to a mouth and so on. Learners will say: What a strange person he is. If pupils are learning the numbers, teachers can use the right hand to do the gestures. For example, to learn the number two; teachers can use two fingers. Six can be showed by pinkie and thumb and Ten means by grasping the fist. If the teachers present their lessons in this way, the pupils can't help themselves following the teacher to learn the lessons.

ChapterⅡ The Factors of Influencing Interest in Learning English

2.1. The Model of Traditional English Teaching

The teacher-centered is the traditional teaching model. “Its characteristics are that the teacher delivers the content of course to the student or infuse to the student by the assistance of writing on the blackboard and instructional media of the teacher. The teacher is the whole teaching process to dominate, then the student is placed in passive position and the teacher instills knowledge.”3 It emphasizes learning by rote so that the type of teaching is single and the class atmosphere is tedious, which cannot arouse the students’ interest. This approach pays more attention to the teacher’s presentation but lacks of interaction among students and deprives the student’s opportunity to raise questions, which cannot afford more opportunities for students to communicate. Under such a model, the teacher teaches on his/her own initiative, and the student is an acceptor of passive external incitement not to instill object. The medium are the supporting tools that the teacher instills to the student, and the teaching material is the contents instilled.

“The traditional language study method emphasizes that the student

wants to learn phonetic symbol and grammar well at the entry-level stage, and remembers a fixed amount of vocabulary.”4 The teaching of this way caused the teacher was centered in classroom, and the student was placed in passive appearance. Traditional of the English classroom teaching adopt preachment type. Which put emphasis on to instill knowledge toward the student, but less inspires a student to consider and work out a problem, and this makes the student always be placed in passive position.

But in fact, education should be a process that students have to participate in the activity, especially the pupils they are longing for imitating, seeking knowledge, and their memory is good. But the mental burden is light and performance desire is strong, which are the pupils’ characteristics, and also is exactly their advantage of leaning English. However, their comprehension ability is opposite weaker, the attention is not easy to be concentrated and they don’t like to be monotonous again and machine of training etc. But traditional teaching is monotonous and not interesting. It can not satisfy the pupils’ aggressive and gradually downplay a pupil’s interest to learn English.

2.2. Relationship Between Teachers and Pupils

The teaching process of school education substantially includes the information, communication of feelings, each other understanding, the interactive behavior of mutual influence, interaction between the teachers and the pupils. Practice proves that the relation of teacher and pupil not only influences teaching atmosphere and teachers and the pupils’ emotion but also influences a teacher teaching work and the pupils’ study attitude.

The current relation of teachers and pupils appears the trend that two classes divide. Parts of teachers strictly guard traditional camp and firmly stand by teachers’ dignity. Even some teachers have persistence on that a teacher for a day is a father for a lifetime. They originally convert the respect for teachers from heart to abnormal view, change the equal relation of teachers and pupils into an order relationship with obedience, Which result in the absolute monarchy, violent in action, control and order in education. However some teachers have superstition Power comes out of weapons and rigorous measures carries on suppression

to the indocile and very naughty pupils. Superficially all is calm, but the problem don’t get effective solution, the negative emotion is continuously growing and Although the pupils are not equal to teachers at school in the knowledge, and experience, teachers and the pupils are equal on the personality. Only under the premise that they respect each other, they may carry on a good communication. The teacher wants student’s democracy, civilization; however which is carried on with democracy and civilization. Absolute monarchy, violent in action, control, order will make the relation of teachers and pupils more and more terrible. Another type is that the teachers always say the teachers and pupils are equal and fair but actually they don’t show consideration for the pupils. So that will discourage a pupil’s enthusiasm and damp down his self-respect, and then will influence the student’s interest in the study.

Pupils easily misunderstand the teachers’ strict request due to their maturity. They consider the kind intention to criticize them as the teacher don’t like them even hate them. Because of the negative effect of the social public opinion they change teacher theory in the center in past extreme into student theory in the center, so regardless what kind of affairs, all the responsibility return to the teacher. This atmosphere to some extent makes the student doesn’t respect a teacher, which also causes the relation of teachers and pupils out of harmony.

2.3. The Habit of the Students

Some students don’t grasp the scientific method of remembering the word but memorize mechanically phrase, as time goes they will consider it as a heavy burden. Subsequently they give up learning English. Some students once meet a strange phrase; they will come to a stop. Then it will influence the ability of reading comprehension and thinking ability. There are some students who still don’t know memory regulation and always adopt a concentrated method for reviewing. “But psychology research expresses that the effect of learning English for an hour every day, lasting for 7 days is far better than studying for 7 hours a day continuously.”6 In other words, its effect is obviously better than

concentration reviewing .All those bad study habits once can not be overcome, they will learn more and more exhausting, and more exhausting will make them not want to learn English. Once this kind of vicious cycle is formed, the result will be obvious. The student doesn’t have the habit to review in time.

Many students usually complain of not recording a single phrase, and remembering and forgetting is very quick because it is placed in a short memory stage. Wanting to remember them, they must make a conflict to forgetting, however, the best weapon is to review. The psychologist thinks that the process of forgetting is quick at first and then slows. When the forgetting will begin, the effect of adopting reviewing is the best better. The physiology characteristics of the pupils are to learn quickly and also forget quickly. So it is very important for the pupils to review periodically. The teachers should adopt various forms to review, such as listening to the tape, reading aloud to recite classmate to ask with each other, plait dialogue etc. forms. Some pupils don’t get into the habit of listening. If the pupils can’t pay attention to the teacher they will miss the pronunciation of the word and the meaning of the sentence. If they can’t concentrate their attention they will not know the teacher’s instruction, and not know what they should do. So the English study should have the method different from with the other academics. The pupils in the grade three are young, active, and can not sit for long time. Their attention of intention to something is very short, which request a student to attain possibly his eyes, ears, mouth and hands use together. According to teacher’s instruction, they actively participate in a classroom activity, and make their own thinking be placed in study appearance. The premise of leaning English well is that the pupils must concentrate on listening.

The pupils don’t get into the habit of reading aloud and reciting. The sense of Language is the key to learn English and it can make the students get into more abundant perceptual experiences and enough language memory. Consequently they can make a quick and accurate reaction to the language materials, language context and language customs by drilling again and again over a long period of time. Then the ability of oral English will

be improved. And it is the demanding of social communication. Practice has proved it is hard to forget the words by reading aloud and recite from the text and it is easy to review them even if the pupils forget them after a long time. The reason is that the word in the sentence is an aggressive and vigorous material in the text and not inflexible and lifeless monogram. Therefore the pupils can master the words, phrases and sentences naturally and deepen the comprehension and usage of the language.

So the pupil’s study habit also influences teaching result.

Chapter Ⅲ The ways to Simulate and Cultivate the Pupil’s Interest in English Class

3.1. Constructing a New Relationship between Teachers and Pupils.

The basic view of human nature is the premise of the relationship between teachers and students. If the education thinks that the idleness and lacking of enterprising is the person’s nature and they only need to be taught strictly and become excellent, so the authority relationship between teachers and students should be the most effective. The way of traditional teachers’ dignity would be the embodiment of the authority relationship between teachers and students. However, the modern education believe that the people have the potential of enter ring, the purpose of education is to develop the person’s potential to promote the person’s sound development, but the authority relationship of teachers and students undoubtedly will strangle the kid’s creative power gift. Therefore, we have to build up new relationship between teachers and students.

Harmony means the emotion contact of the teachers and the students and the love is a core, which needs a teacher to pour enthusiasm into the students and to show more concern to the students who have a difficult in study. The love will change the relationship between “I” and “you” in the teaching into the relation of “we”. The love makes teachers and

students obtain the communication of mind, share the happiness of success together, and share annoyance of frustrating. Harmonious relationship between teachers and students is the drive force to promote student’s study.

“According to the view of sociology, teaching is a kind of process teachers and the students interact with each other, the capability and the quality of the interaction between the teachers and the students have the decisive influence on the teaching effect, because in the teaching activity, the teacher always control its teaching behavior by certain idea and exert the influence on students.”7 And the students will also accept the influence according to their own value, need and the comprehension, and make a reaction on the activity. The student’s reaction will further enhance or revise the education idea and behavior that the teacher originally possessed.So the interaction will stimulate the students’ interest.

A teacher should be the student’s bosom friends by communication with students and even build up the harmonious relationship between teachers and pupils like mother and daughter, father and son or the brothers and sisters, who make the student feel they are worth to trust. They can talk with each other with no doubt.

“The more harmonious the relationship between the teacher and the student grows the more conspicuous the dynamic qualities of classroom learning become.”8 The students, in such an atmosphere, become more independent in learning. They feel that they have the responsibility to behave well, to perform well, to learn and to respond more actively than before.

3.2Different Activities after Class The last method is the different activities after class. If a teacher leaves a meaningful word as additions, the pupils will look up the dictionary to find out the different meanings, they will feel happy, so they will look forward to such kind of “homework”. Let's take the word “light” for example, it has many meanings, the first is a noun, meaning the bulb; the second is an adjective, meaning easy to lift, opposite to heavy; the third one is an adjective, too, meaning pale, like light blue or light green and so on. It stimulates pupils' interests in seeking and digging knowledge.

3.3. Organizing Colorful Teaching Forms

Study have shown that listening to the songs can promote the input, internalizing and acquisition of languages; singing songs help improve the comprehension of music, strengthen sense of rhythm, study pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure, increase the vocabulary, strengthen the edifying of language culture, excite interest and motive of studying English. Arranging the right time for student to listen or sing English songs can dispel the fatigue, enliven the learning atmosphere of class, strengthen the group’s cohesiveness and improve the level of cognition and emotion.

English song can naturally duct contents of the new lesson. “Scientists have found that the speed and rhythm of music not only can control, the rhythm of human body, but also has a direct influence on human brain. Pleasant melody can cheer up a person, make a person full of high spirit, and even bring out a person’s active mood, which can help the brain memorize things more quickly and help to keep them for a much longer time.”9 The word and sentence are mixed in to the melody that the pupil is familiar with and the pupil feels acquaint with fresh, then masters the knowledge in the relaxed atmosphere. As we known, to memorize English words, expressions, and sentence patterns as well as possible is really not an easy thing. Now that music ha such positive effects as are mentioned above, we can make use of English songs to memorize and enlarge English vocabulary---with the company of music.

Games in communicative activities take an active effect to impel the pupils to acquaint the second language in the relax environment, such as one pupil expresses the meaning of the word while the other guesses what the word is. Such as when the teacher teach the 5 B Unit 6 A PE lesson

A part T: Hello, boys and girls! Let’s play a game, once the pupil hears, the interest come up all of a sudden, and each is eager to have a try. The teacher then explains the contents in detail at this time. T: Now, when I say:” Touch your face. “You the should touch your face like me,

and at the same time you should say:” This is my face. “Then the teachers and the pupils do this game together. This method that leads to new lesson not only reviewed a great deal of vocabulary and sentence and prepare for new lesson, the pupils unconsciously get into to the appearance to learn new information.

Simple drawing is a method to attract the pupil’s attention in English teaching in elementary school. It is a basic technical ability for English teacher to draw simple pictures. It can strengthen the vivid and interest of classroom teaching.

English teaching in elementary school can adopt objects to teach, which can attract the pupils’ attention and help a pupil understand knowledge quickly, and improve the pupil’s interest in English. While introducing the construction of “there be”, the teacher can point at classroom to ask a pupil,

T: What’s this? (Classroom).

Ss: It’s a classroom.

T: What’s this? (Blackboard)

Ss: It’s a blackboard.

T: Yes, this is a classroom and this is a blackboard. There is a blackboard in the classroom. Is there a blackboard in the classroom? Yes, there is. There is a blackboard in the classroom.

The teacher repeat it several times, then write the sentence construction on the blackboard, so the pupil is very quick to master the sentence structure, the usage and meaning of the sentence structure “there be”.

Creating in the real language scene let the student have opportunity to make use of the language knowledge that the pupils learn from the book to carry on English conversation, which stir up the interest of their study English. The real language scene generally can be divided into 3 kinds: a. Exchange greeting. Such as greetings, congratulating, wish, gratitude, apologizing and answer, b. Social intercourses. Scene. Asking the way, making a phone call, talking about weather and tim


The tedious teaching is the performance that takes no responsibility to the pupils. English differs from other foundation academics. English is not only a knowledge lesson, but also a practice lesson. If the teacher cannot arouse the pupils’ interest, they will feel learning English is drudgery. In the teaching, thus, the teacher should increase interest, fully consider pupils’ request of the interest of teaching content in the process of teaching designing, and stirs up maximally the pupils’ interest in the study.

In a word, interest is the first for English study. The ability of the pupil’s language is to a large extent limited by interest in the English study. It is difficult to imagine how to foster the ability of social intercourse if the pupils lose interest in English. So the teacher adopt interest teaching in classroom teaching by abundant and colorful activities that the pupil is pleased to participated which can not only make pupils acquire knowledge, technical ability and ability, but also acquire the fun of study again, building up the pupil’s confidence in the happy atmosphere and laying good foundation for their life study and development. Interest English teaching in elementary school embody the content of carrying out the education for all-round development. Only so our English teaching result would raise and the pupil’s English ability would raise.
