The tradition of staying up late on New Year’s Eve originated from an interesting folktale. In ancient China, there lived a monster named Year. On New Year’s Eve, it always went out from its burrow to devour people.

所以在春節前夜,家人們都會聚在一起吃晚飯。 晚飯以後也沒有人敢睡覺,大家坐在一起聊天 壯膽。因此,慶祝春節也被叫作“過年”,春 節前夜的這頓飯如今被稱為“團圓飯”。
Because of the monster Year, every household would have dinner together. After dinner, no one dared go to sleep, and all the family members would sit together, chatting and emboldening each other. Therefore, “celebrating the Spring Festival” is also called “passing the Year”, and the dinner is called “reunion dinner” now.

“魚”和“富餘”的“餘”同音。春節吃魚代表“年年有餘” 的美好願望。

“Fish(魚)” is homophonic with “abundance(餘)” in Chinese.
It symbolizes a wish for abundance in every year.

饺子的形状像中国古代的金元宝,因此人们吃饺子以此来 希望财富到来。 The shape of dumpling is like gold ingot from ancient China. So people eat dumplings in the Spring Festival is wish for money and treasure in New Year.
