Dad smiled. ―That’s Venus（金星）,‖ he said, ―Venus was only a planet. She looked bigger and brighter because she was much than the stars. Poor old Venus didn’t even make her reflected（反射）light.‖
―I like it anyway,‖ I said, ―I had loved Venus even that Christmas. You could see it in the early evening, and if you got up early, you could still see it in the morning, after all the stars had disappeared.‖
Dad said, ―Ok, it’s Christmas. I your decision. You can have it if you want.‖ And he gave me Venus. We all laughed about the kids who believed in the Santa myth（圣诞传说）and got nothing for Christmas but a bunch of cheap plastic toys. ―Many years later, when all the junk they got is broken and long forgotten,‖ Dad said, ―you will have your star.

Last month , I returned to Australia to attend my sister’s wedding .Although it was a very modern wedding, my sister kept one tradition that comes from an old English poem .
The poem says that a bride (新娘)must wear "something old, something new ,something borrowed ,something blue.‖ It is said to bring good luck to the marriage .
Something old is something passed on from the bride’s family .It could be an heirloom(传家宝) that has been in the family for years ,or a piece of her mother’s dress. This is meant to show a connection with the bride’s family .
Something new brings hope for the future of the couple .It can be the new wedding dress, or new shoes.
Something borrowed is normally an item of clothing or jewelry(珠宝). It is borrowed from one of the bride’s friends who have a happy marriage. It is believed to bring some of the friend’s luck in her marriage to the bride . Last is something blue ,which comes from another rhyme:―Marry in blue ,husband be true.‖ This means that a bride who wears blue will have a faithful(忠诚的) husband .It could be blue on her jewelry or on her shoes .
These days, most brides do not believe that wearing these items will really bring them good luck. However, they wear them anyway in recognition that traditions are important.

Zebra’s stripes(条纹) have puzzled scientists around the world for centuries. What is the biological purpose of being covered with in black and white stripes?
There are many theories that try to answer that question .Charles Darwin , the famous biologist ,thought that Zebra’s stripes were used to attract partners .
Alfred Wallace ,the British naturalist and biologist thought the stripes were camouflage(伪装). They make the zebras hard to see at night and create an optical illusion(视错觉) in the day .This protects them from being hunted by lions and other fierce animals .
But the zebra’s real enemy might be a whole lot smaller .A new study by Tim Caro from the University of California has come up with an entirely new theory on why zebras have stripes .He thinks that their stripes will keep biting flies away from them .
Caro and his colleagues took a different route to other scientists who have studied zebra’s stripes .Instead of looking just at zebras ,he looked at all equids (马科动物)（horses ,zebras and asses）and the different patterns of their stripes.
He found that species (物种）that lives in areas with dangerous flies were more likely to have stripes all over their bodies .Zebras live in Africa ,where biting flies can cause great harm by both passing on diseases and sucking(吸）out dangerous amounts of blood.
Caro is happy that they have answered the question of why zebras have stripes, but now he is left another question: why don’t flies likes stripes ?
―That’s what happens in science‖, he told The New Yorker magazine .―You answer one question and it leads to six more.‖

I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a major insurance(保险业) company. I told him honestly why I wanted the job----I needed to keep my family in Boston. My wife recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some of the extreme trauma (精神创伤) and pain of the loss for my 16-year-old daughter. It was important for me to keep her in her high school. I could still hardly talk about the loss of my wife.
Bruce, the interviewer, was politely empathetic(同情的), but he didn't probe (探问)any further. He admitted my loss and with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of the interview, Bruce took me
to lunch with another person. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he, too, had lost his wife. And, like me, he had also been married 20 years and had three children.
In his sharing, I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had -----a pain that was almost
impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a beloved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that, if I need help of just want someone to talk to, I should feel free to give him a call. Whether I got the job or not, he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help. When he had no idea if we would ever see each other again, he helped our family deal with one of the greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview into a caring support for another person in need.
