Lying is wrong. But do you know that it is bad for both your physical and mental health?
A recent study suggests that telling fewer lies helps people physically and mentally.
―Each week for ten weeks, 110 people aged from 18 to 71 were tested to see the relationship between the number of lies they told and their health,‖ said Anita Kelly, a psychology professor of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. ―When they li
Researchers asked the people in two groups to do the experiment. Group A was told to avoid(避免) telling any lies for any reason to anyone. They could omit(忽略) the truth, refuse to answer questions and keep secrets, but they could not say anything that they knew was not true. Group B was not told anything like this.
Over the study period, the relationship between less lying and improved health was much stronger in Group A when people in Group A told fewer lies in a week than they did in other weeks, they experienced fewer health problems such as sore throats and headaches. Professor Linda Stroh said, ―When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress (压力).‖
The results of past research show that each American tells about 11 lies a week. Kelly said people in Group A were allowed to tell only one lie each week. In both groups, when people lies less during a week, they reported better physical and mental health during that period.
―It’s certainly a good thing to have people be more honest,‖ said psychologist Robert Feldman of the
University of Massachusetts. ―It may improve our mental health, but I don’t think it can improve our physical health.‖

In November, 2011, a robot called Curiosity was sent into space by scientists in California. On August 6, 2012, after more than eight months of travel, curiosity reached Mars. The robot landed near Mars’ equator. Minutes later, it sent back to the earth a picture of its own wheels on Mars, ―The robot has landed in a nice flat place,‖ said engineer, Adam Steltzne.
Weighting about a ton, the robot is the heaviest Mars explorer yet. Three robots that were sent before Curiosity depended on large airbags for a soft, safe landing. But Curiosity’s weight made landing very difficult. The scientists planned a number of steps to slow down the spacecraft carrying Curiosity so that it would not go crashing into Mars. As the craft came close Mars, a large parachute opened, helping to slow down the landing later, other things helped slow it down more. In the end, Curiosity had a safe, gentle landing.
Curiosity will stay on Mars for 98 weeks, looking for the ingredients of life. It might find an answer to the question of whether or not Mars once has life.
Scientists hope that Curiosity will make some big discoveries. But for the moment they are happy that their latest robot landed on Mars safely. Charles Elachi, director of the landing team, compared his team of scientists to a team of Olympic athletes. ―This team came back with a gold medal,‖ he said.

A peaceful mind is very important for our effectiveness(效率). It keeps us calm and allows us to stay happy during the day, no matter what the situation is. So, here, I would like to share some ways to have a ―mind like water‖, a state of mind that is as peaceful as calm water. Pick the ones that work for you:
Listen to your heart
Your heart tells you what is the right thing to do. It is where your deepest values live. Following what your
heart says helps you be true to yourself, and that helps you get a peaceful mind. So learn to listen more to your heart, and do what it tells you to do.
Don’t take in too much information
Getting more information often means introducing more noise into your mind. That’s why limiting your information intake is important for a calm and peaceful mind. You should take in no more information than necessary.
Whatever you do, you do not need to be in a hurry. Doing so will only take you faster in the wrong direction. First of all, you need to know the right direction to go. Slow down so that you can clearly hear the voice of your heart.
Don’t think too much about yourself and do something for other people
We usually think about our own needs and problems most of the time. But self-centered thoughts can’t bring peace into our mind. Instead, it may make us feel stressed. So don’t think too much about yourself; forget yourself for a while. Think about other people more often and think what you can do for others, then do it. Giving will make you happy and give you peace of mind.
26. The writer thinks that it is important for you _________________ because it keeps you calm and __________________ during the day.
27. Your deepest values live ___________________, so you should follow ______________________ and be true to yourself.
28. Information sometimes means ___________________. You shouldn’t take in _________________ necessary.
